Dependence of Exciton Mobility on Structure in Single-Walled Carbon Nanotubes

2010

Optically generated excitons in semiconducting single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) display substantial diffusional mobility. This property allows excitons to encounter ∼104 carbon atoms during their lifetime and accounts for their efficient deactivation by sparse quenching sites. We report here experimental determinations of the mobilities of optically generated excitons in 10 different (n,m) species of semiconducting SWCNTs. Exciton diffusional ranges were deduced from measurements of stepwise photoluminescence quenching in selected individual SWCNTs coated with sodium deoxycholate surfactant and immobilized in agarose gel. A refined data analysis method deduced mean exciton ranges fro…

Measurement of optical second-harmonic generation from an individual single-walled carbon nanotube

2013

We show that optical second-harmonic generation (SHG) can be observed from individual single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) and, furthermore, allows imaging of individual tubes. Detailed analysis of our results suggests that the structural noncentrosymmetry, as required for SHG, arises from the non-zero chiral angle of the SWCNT. SHG thus has potential as a fast, non-destructive, and simple method for imaging of individual nanomolecules and for probing their chiral properties. Even more, it opens the possibility to optically determine the handedness of individual SWCNTs.

Solid Contact Potentiometric Sensors Based on a New Class of Ionic Liquids on Thiacalixarene Platform

2018

New solid-contact potentiometric sensors have been developed for hydrogen phosphate recognition on the basis of ionic liquids containing tetrasubstituted derivatives of thiacalix[4]arene in cone and 1,3-alternate conformations with trimethyl- and triethylammonium fragments at the lower rim substituents. The recognition of selected anions including carbonate, hydrogen phosphate, perchlorate, oxalate, picrate, and EDTA was conducted using electrochemical impedance spectroscopy with ferricyanide redox probe. For the potentiometric sensor assembling, the ionic liquids were stabilized by multiwalled carbon nanotubes and carbon black deposited on the glassy carbon electrode. The influence of supp…

Photo-Stability Improvement of Polystyrene-block-Polybutadiene-block-Polystyrene through Carbon Nanotubes

2015

The photo-oxidation stability of Polystyrene-Polybutadiene-Polystyrene (SBS) based nanocomposites containing bare multi-walled carbon nanotubes (CNTs) and carbon nanotubes bearing hydroxyl functional groups (CNTs-OH) in comparison to that of pristine SBS has been widely investigated. The photo-oxidation of pristine SBS occurs through crosslinking reactions and oxidized species formation and both these processes begin at early stage of exposure. The formation of crosslinking, formerly in polybutadiene phase, assessed by spectroscopical (FTIR), mechanical, dynamic mechanical and rheological analysis, leads to occurrence of internal mechanical stresses in the solid state and the SBS samples be…

Unravelling Radicals Reactivity Towards Carbon Nanotubes Manipulation/Functionalization

2016

Carbon Nanotubes (CNTs) chemistry is under constant evolution, as a consequence of the deep interest of the scientific community in finding new applications for these versatile materials. New and old synthetic protocols are used for improving the control of the functionalization degree of the final materials and for offering to scientists the possibility to fine-tune their final properties. In this Review, we focus the attention on radical reactions, a class of protocols characterized by small number of steps, different degrees of functionalization and enhanced solubility of the final modified CNTs, in the desired environment. The most well-known protocols are analysed providing some releva…

Carbocatalytic Oxidative Dehydrogenative Couplings of (Hetero)Aryls by Oxidized Multi‐Walled Carbon Nanotubes in Liquid Phase

2019

HNO3-oxidized carbon nanotubes catalyze oxidative dehydrogenative (ODH) carbon-carbon bond formation between electron-rich (hetero)aryls with O-2 as a terminal oxidant. The recyclable carbocatalytic method provides a convenient and an operationally easy synthetic protocol for accessing various benzofused homodimers, biaryls, triphenylenes, and related benzofused heteroaryls that are highly useful frameworks for material chemistry applications. Carbonyls/quinones are the catalytically active site of the carbocatalyst as indicated by model compounds and titration experiments. Further investigations of the reaction mechanism with a combination of experimental and DFT methods support the compet…

LIQUIDI IONICI E FULLERENI: PIATTAFORME PER NUOVI MATERIALI

The synthesis of innovative catalysts based on different carbon nanoforms (CNFs), namely fullerene C60 and carbon nanotubes (CNTs), and their application in Suzuki and Heck C-C coupling reactions, constitutes the common thread of the first part (Chapter 1 and 2) of this thesis. C60 and CNTs were functionalized with ionic liquids (ILs) and poly-amidoamine (PAMAM) dendrimers, respectively, and used as supports for palladium nanoparticles (PdNPs). Moreover, additional supported catalytic systems based on one of the synthesized C60-IL hybrids were prepared and successfully employed in the title coupling reactions. The final part (Chapter 3) of the thesis deals on the microwave-mediated synthesi…
