Diagenetic carbonates, metamorphic carbonates, primary hydrothermal carbonates, and secondary remobilized carbonates (including sinters) from the Schwarzwald ore district in SW Germany formed in various tectonic settings and hydrothermal environments over a period of almost 300 Ma. AbstractUpper Triassic/Lower Jurassic organic-rich shales and interbedded carbonates (Rhaetian → Sinemurian) are widespread in the subsurface of southeastern Sicily where important oil fields have been found hosted in Triassic reservoirs. Core samples from wells drilled offshore and onshore were studied from petrographie and geochemical viewpoints.In the Hettangian/Sinemurian shale-carbonate sequences, which accumulated in a rapidly subsiding basin, the micritic aragonitic mud is still largely preserved. Abstract It has recently been shown that the clumped isotopic composition (Δ47) of carbonate-bearing hydroxyapatite (CHAP) from teeth and bones reveals important information about the body temperature of vertebrates (Eagle et al., 2010, 2011). In this study we reinvestigate the temperature dependence of Δ47 in CHAP, extending the temperature range from 2 to 59 °C. In addition, the effects of chemical pre-treatment of CHAP on its bulk and clumped isotopic composition are studied. CHAP is best reacted with phosphoric acid at 90 to 110 °C minimizing the potential of evolved CO2 or reaction intermediates to re-equilibrate with traces of water in the acid environment. Minerals of the rare-earth elements (REE) occur as supergene phases in the Schwarzwald ore district, southwestern Germany. They form by alteration of hydrothermal fluorite – barite – quartz – carbonate veins with various associations, including Cu– Pb, Pb–Zn and Co–Bi–Ag–U assemblages in sandstones, gneisses and granites. A biogeochemical model for chalk alteration by fungi in semiarid environments

Fungal filaments are the most abundant organic features in weathered profiles developed on chalky limestone ("platy calcrete"). Their activity affects the mineral dynamics of the pore/carbonate microsystem. A theoretical biogeochemical model is proposed to describe the Ca-oxalate-carbonate cycle related to fungal activity in dry environments.

Bulk carbonate isotope compositions and carbonate petrography from upper Eocene and lower Oligocene siliciclastic sediments of the CRP-3 sediment core (Victoria Land Basin, Antarctica) have been investigated with the aim of contributing to reconstruction of the Antarctic Cenozoic palaeoclimate. Most of the carbonate is calcite cement occurring as patches, nodules and horizons and consisting of equant and/or drusy sparry calcite, pervasive blocky calcite and rare poikilotopic calcite spar. 18O-depleted values (from −17 to −8 δ‰) of the CRP-3 carbonates suggest that the precipitating fluids were a mixing between marine and meteoric waters from melting glaciers. Geochemical characterization of groundwater and submarine discharge in the south-eastern Sicily

Abstract The main results of a hydrogeochemical survey carried out during 2002–2003 along the coast of the south-eastern Sicily, which aimed at geochemical characterization of both groundwater chemistry and submarine groundwater discharge (SGD) in the area are presented. A general frame of chemical processes affecting the studied groundwater and SGD point out that most samples fall within the calcite-anhydrite-dolomite field (CAD). Abstract Understanding the relationship between stable isotope signals recorded in speleothems (δ 13 C and δ 18 O) and the isotopic composition of the carbonate species in the soil water is of great importance for their interpretation in terms of past climate variability. Here the evolution of the carbon isotope composition of soil water on its way down to the cave during dissolution of limestone is studied for both closed and open-closed conditions with respect to CO 2 . In human bone, amorphous calcium carbonate (ACC) is formed as a precursor of the crystalline carbonated apatite/hydroxyapatite (HA). Here we describe that the metastable ACC phase can be stabilized by inorganic polyphosphate (polyP) that is also used as a phosphate source for the non-enzymatic carbonate/phosphate exchange during HA formation. This polymer was found to suppress the transformation of ACC into crystalline CaCO3 at a percentage of 5% [w/w] ("CCP5") with respect to CaCO3 and almost completely at 10% [w/w] ("CCP10"). Both preparations (CaCO3/polyP) are amorphous, but also contain small amounts of vaterite, as revealed by XRD, FTIR and SEM analyses. They did not affect the growth/…
