Assessing the use of the mitochondrial cox1 marker for use in DNA barcoding of red algae (Rhodophyta)

2011

The red algae, a remarkably diverse group of organisms, are difficult to identify using morphology alone. Following the proposal to use the mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase subunit 1 (cox1) for DNA barcoding animals, we assessed the use of this, ne in the identification of red algae using 48 samples plus 31 sequences obtained from GenBank. The data set spanned six gene orders of red algae: the Bangiales, Ceramiales, Corallinales, Gigartinales, Gracilariales and Rhodymeniales. The results indicated that species could be discriminated. Intraspecific variation was between 0 and 4 bp over 539 bp analyzed except in Mastocarpus stellatus (0-14 bp) and Gracilaria gracilis (0-11 bp). Cryptic dive…

2008

<p><em>The objective of this research was to know the structure, composition, potency of mangrove tree and also exploitation of mangrove observation type in Isenebuai Village District Rumberpon Teluk Wondama. Vegetation observation was conducted using line and plot method and the interview technique flourish structure. The result of analyse vegetasi study show that 11 mangrove plant species from 5 families were found. The 11 species are Aegiceras corniculatum, Bruguiera sylindrica, Bruguiera gymnorrhiza, Rhizophora stylosa ,Rhizophora mucronata, Ceriops tagal, Heritiera littoralis, Heritiera globosa, Lumnitzera litorea, Xylocarpus granatum and  Xylocarpus moluccensis. The size and shape of shells used by hermit crabs: A multivariate analysis of Clibanarius erythropus

2009

Shell attributes such as weight and shape affect the reproduction, growth, predator avoidance and behaviour of several hermit crab species. Although the importance of these attributes has been extensively investigated, it is still difficult to assess the relative role of size and shape. Multivariate techniques allow concise and efficient quantitative analysis of these multidimensional properties, and this paper aims to understand their role in determining patterns of hermit crab shell use. To this end, a multivariate approach based on a combination of size-unconstrained (shape) PCA and RDA ordination was used to model the biometrics of southern Mediterranean Clibanarius erythropus populatio…

Osteoblastic osteogenic sarcoma in a 13-month-old girl.

1994

Summary Osteosarcoma is exceptional in early periods of life. Therefore osteosarcomas involvingthe bones of the hand are extremely rare. We present a case of an osteogenic sarcoma involving the second metacarpal bone of a 13-month-old girl who has been remaining free of disease, after treatment — radial amputation and chemotherapy pre- and post-operative-, for a period of 10 years in the follow-up.

Chondrodysplasia punctata, tibia-metacarpal (MT) type.

1990

We describe 7 patients with a new form of chondrodysplasia punctata. Its principal clinical manifestations are flat midface and nose, short limbs, and otherwise normal development. Consistent radiologic manifestations in the newborn infant are discrete calcific stippling, coronal clefts of vertebral bodies, short tibiae, and shortness of the 2nd and 3rd metacarpal bones. Radiologic findings in the older child include shortness of tibiae and the 3rd and 4th metacarpals.
