Prevalence trends of oral squamous cell carcinoma. Mexico City's General Hospital experience
2013
Objective: Recent reports suggest an increase in oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) frequency. To improve programs in public health, it is necessary to understand the epidemiological conditions. The aim of this study was to analyze the trend in gender, age, anatomic zone and OSCC stage from Mexico City's General Hospital patients from 1990 to 2008. Study design: A retrospective review of all OSCC cases diagnosed by the Pathology Department of the Mexico City General Hospital was performed. Demographic data, in addition to anatomic zone and histological degree of differentiation were obtained. Central tendency, dispersion and prevalence rate per 100,000 individuals were determined. The bacteremia of dental origin and its implications in the appearance of bacterial endocarditis
2014
Numerous systemic diseases may affect the oral cavity and vice versa,in particular severe diseases that involve the heart valve. In these cases, additional measures or a modification to our dental treatment need to be taken. We are aware of various diseases that can cause the emergence of bacterial endocarditis (BE), such as; rheumatic fever, valve lesions due to intravenous drug use, Kawasaki disease and valve surgery, among others. Due to its severity when it is not taken into account in dental treatment, we intend to show the evolution of the antimicrobial prophylaxis towards this condition. Furthermore, we intend to publish the current guidelines of institutions and societies which incr…
Immunohistochemical expression of MMP-2 and MMP-8 in oral squamous cell carcinoma
2015
Background: Matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) are endopeptidases that can degrade extracellular matrix components and affect invasiveness and aggressiveness of oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC). The aim of this study was to examine the immunohistochemical expression of MMP-2 and MMP-8 in OSCCs in patients presenting at the Tertiary Health facility in Nigeria Materials and Methods: Formalin-fixed, paraffin-embedded (FFPE) OSCC samples diagnosed between the years 2010 and 2012 were used for his study. The FFPE were processed for MMP-2 and MMP-8 using the specifications of the manufacturer. Two investigators reviewed the slides scoring the pattern and intensity of staining as negative (0), we…
Dental caries experience and salivary Streptococcus mutans, Lactobacilli scores, salivary flow rate and salivary buffering capacity among 6 year old …
2011
Objectives: The aim of this study was to assess the possible relationship between salivary cariogenic microflora, buffer capacity, secretion rate and caries experience among 6 –year- old school going children in Davangere city, Karnataka, India. Study design: A total of 196, 6 year old school children were selected by a two- stage random sampling method. Parents were interviewed regarding sociodemographic details. Clinical examination of children was conducted to assess dental caries experience and stimulated saliva was collected to assess S.mutans levels, lactobacilli, salivary flow and buffering capacity of saliva. Difference in proportions was tested using Pearson 2 test, and also analy…
Validation of the chinese version of the oral health impact profile for TMDs (OHIP- TMDs-C)
2015
Objectives: The aim of this study was to evaluate the reliability and validity of the the Chinese version of the Oral Health Impact Profile for TMDs (OHIP-TMDs-C). Study Design: The OHIP-TMDs was initially translated and cross-culturally adapted to Chinese following international guidelines; then subsequently validated for the psychometric characteristics of reliability and validity. In total, 156 participants with temporomandibular disorders (TMDs) were recruited to complete the questionnaire. The reliability of the OHIP-TMDs-C was evaluated using internal consistency and test-retest methods. The validity of the OHIP-TMDs-C was analysed by construct validity and convergent validity. Constr…
Dental considerations in patients with heart disease
2011
Summary: Cardiovascular diseases are one of the main causes of death in the developed world, and represent the first cause of mortality in Spain. In addition to their associated morbidity, such disorders are important due to the number of affected individuals and the many patients subjected to treatment because of them. Objective: An update is provided on the oral manifestations seen in patients with arterial hypertension, ischemic heart disease, arrhythmias and heart failure, and on the dental management of such patients. Material and methods: A Medline-PubMed search was conducted of the literature over the last 10 years using the keywords: “cardiopathy”, “dental management”, “endocarditis…
Prospective study of a group of pre-university students evaluating anxiety and depression relationships with temporomandibular disorders
2012
Objectives: The aim of this prospective longitudinal study was to evaluate the relationships between anxiety, depression, and temporomandibular disorders (TMD) in a sample of pre-university students submitted to a stressful event. Study design: 153 students from a pre-university course (82 females and 71 males between 16 and 31 years old) were given a survey about TMD symptoms and a survey about anxiety and depression scale at the beginning and the end of the preparatory course (August 2009-T1, and November 2009-T2). Results: Results were analyzed using a chi-square test and Odds Ratio (OR), significance level of á = 0.05. Statistical significance were found to depression rates in students …
Health-related quality of life after mandibular resection for oral cancer: reconstruction with free fibula flap
2014
Objectives: Mandibular resection for oral cancer is often necessary to achieve an adequate margin of tumor clear - ance. Mandibular resection has been associated with a poor health-related quality of life (HRQOL), particularly before free fibula flap to reconstruct the defect. The aim of this study was to evaluate health-related quality of life in patients who have had mandibular resections of oral cancer and reconstruction with free fibula flap. Study D esigns: There were 115 consecutive patients between 2008 and 2011 who were treated by primary surgery for oral squamous cell carcinoma, 34 patients had a mandibular resection. HRQOL was assessed by means of the 14-item Oral Health Impact Pr…
Clinical and radiographical evaluation of non-syndromic hypodontia and hyperdontia in permanent dentition
2009
Objectives: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the clinical and radiographical characteristics of non-syndromic hypodontia and hyperdontia in the permanent dentition.Study design: This study included 139 patients. Clinical and radiographical examinations were carried out by two examiners. Number and localization of missing or supernumerary teeth, and pathologies associated with the teeth, were recorded. Other teeth in the mouth were also examined for the presence of additional dental anomalies. Results: A total of 256 congenitally missing teeth were observed in 102 patients, and 73 supernumerary teeth were observed in 37 patients.
