Megabenthos Underwater Video (MUV): a new device to evaluate species distribution in hard-to-reach marine areas

A device, called Megabenthos Underwater Video (MUV), was designed and built for the counting and the size estimate of benthic organisms in hard-to-reach areas. Since 2014 Cassiopea andromeda, an invasive alien jellyfish in the Mediterranean Sea with benthic behavior, colonized a recreational harbor (Cala) of Palermo with a stable population. Studying the species distribution in this area with classical methods (such as visual census, ROV, etc.) was not applicable due to the large presence of obstacles (ropes, anchor cables, boats) and to dive difficulties in these types of area. We have investigated the non-adiabatic relaxation processes occurring in the singlet manifold of 4-(dimethylamino)benzethyne (DMABE){,} a molecule isoelectronic with 4-(dimethylamino)benzonitrile (DMABN) but lacking its characteristic dual fluorescence{,} using multireference perturbation theory methods. The results obtained point out to the existence of a two-fold decay mechanism in which the population of the initially accessed La state bifurcates towards a locally excited (LE) and a [small pi][sigma]* state. On the role of the triplet state in the cis/trans isomerization of rhodopsin: A CASPT2//CASSCF study of a model chromophore

The possibility of population of the lowest-lying triplet state (T1) in the early events of the photochemical isomerization process of a model chromophore of Rhodopsin (Rh) has been analyzed using multireference perturbation theory (CASPT2//CASSCF) methods. It is shown that the characteristics of the isomerization process namely small S1−T1 gap, presence of hydrogen out of plane active vibrational modes, and existence of a dense manifold of vibrational states, render possible the fulfilment of the conditions needed for the population of T1. Pēdējos gados strauji palielinās datu apjomi, kas ir jāanalizē. Darbā tiek pētīta iespēja vienmērīgi noslogot Cassandra datu bāzes klasteri, ja tanī tiek izmantotas lietotāja definētās funkcijas (LDF), kuras rada procesora slodzi. Lietotājs var uzrakstīt LDF ar dažādu izpildes laika sarežģītību. Katra no LDF var apstrādāt datus ar dažādu izmēru. Rezultātā atsevišķi klastera mezgli var tikt pārslogoti, kamēr pārējie ir brīvi. Pētījuma mērķis ir izstrādāt un veikt praktiskus eksperimentus slodzes vienmērīgas sadalīšanas algoritmam, kas noteiktu Cassandra klastera mezgla aizņemtības ilgumu, ja kopā ar LDF tiek izpildīti lasīšanas vaicājumi. In vitro evaluation of glycol chitosan based formulations as oral delivery systems for efflux pump inhibition.

Recently, we have reported that glycol chitosan (GCS) was able to reverse the P- glycoprotein (P-gp) efflux pump. The objective of the present study was to evaluate the potential of two GCS-based dosage forms (aqueous solution or nanoparticle suspension) for oral administration of the P-gp substrate Rho-123. A further aim of the present study was to assess the effect of the glycol chitosan-4-thiobutylamidine thiomer (GCS-TBA) on P-gp activity considering that the corresponding thiomer of chitosan series is a well-known P-gp inhibitor. Multipotential nestin and Isl-1 positive mesenchymal stem cells isolated from human pancreatic islets.

Mesenchymal cells in the developing pancreas express the neural stem cell marker nestin and the transcription factor islet-1 (Isl-1). Using defined culture conditions we isolated on a single cell basis nestin producing cells from human pancreatic islets. These cells were immortalized with lentiviral vectors coding for telomerase and mBmi. They are positive for Isl-1 and nestin and have the potential to adopt a pancreatic endocrine phenotype with expression of critical transcription factors including Ipf-1, Isl-1, Ngn-3, Pax4, Pax6, Nkx2.2, and Nkx6.1 as well as the islet hormones insulin, glucagon, and somatostatin.
