Decentralization as an incentive scheme when regional differences are large

2010

It has been suggested that large regional differences could be an obstacle to that part of the political accountability of office-holders which is based on yardstick competition among governments. The paper addresses that question and concludes that the obstacle is not too serious in general. The second part of the paper is devoted to the persistent economic underperformance of some regions in countries such as Germany, Italy and (with regard to regions overseas) France. How is it that the mechanism of yardstick competition induces a convergence of economic performance among European Union member countries, even those particularly poor initially, but fails to induce all the underperforming …

Sequential Effects of Phonological Priming in Visual Word Recognition

2005

International audience; Two masked priming experiments were conducted to examine phonological priming of bisyllabic words in French, and in particular, whether it operates sequentially or in parallel. Bisyllabic target words were primed by pseudowords that shared either the first or the second phonological syllable of the target. Overlap of the first syllable only-not the second-produced facilitation in both the lexical decision and the naming tasks. These findings suggest that, for polysyllabic words, phonological codes are computed sequentially during silent reading and reading aloud.

Survey of methods to visualize alternatives in multiple criteria decision making problems

2012

When solving decision problems where multiple conflicting criteria are to be considered simultaneously, decision makers must compare several different alternatives and select the most preferred one. The task of comparing multidimensional vectors is very demanding for the decision maker without any support. Different graphical visualization tools can be used to support and help the decision maker in understanding similarities and differences between the alternatives and graphical illustration is a very important part of decision support systems that are used in solving multiple criteria decision making problems. The visualization task is by no means trivial because, on the one hand, the grap…

Systems Thinking and Sustainability in Organisations

2015

This set of articles arises from a series of conferences (Business Systems Laboratory Symposia, 2013-2015) and in particular from the 2nd Business systems Laboratory International Symposium, Rome 2014 with the theme ‘Systems Thinking for a Sustainable Economy’, concerned with systems thinking and its relations with sustainable management, where the relevance of systems thinking was demonstrated. The current period of our global society is characterised by intense transformations in the competitive logics of organisations, markets, and, generally speaking, society. Social circumstances today are typified by dynamism, connectivity, nonlinearity, and emergent properties — in other words by ‘co…

'Ignosce, non possum'. Modelli declamatori e topoi tragici a confronto: padri e figli tra declamazione e tragedia

2013

This paper deals with the links between Latin declamation and tragedy through the investigation of some controversiae, focusing on the relationship father-son. The comparison between some declamatories passages (Sen. contr. 1, 4 and Calp. exc. 18) and some Senecan tragic verses (from Thyestes and Phaedra) allows to detect the proximity between the rhetoric practiced in the schools of declamation and Senecan tragic theatre.

Regalismo e inmunidad eclesiástica en la España del siglo XVIII: la resistencia del clero valenciano a la imposición del estanco del tabaco

2007

The charters abolition decree of the Kingdoms of Valencia and Aragon kept the traditional regulation on the jurisdiction and ecclesiastic immunity, and this exception was ratified in the Royal Order the 7th of September in 1707. As the members of this class thought that it was implying a reinforcement of their privileges, they presented an intense resistance to the imposition of the tobacco monopoly, which the monarchy considered as a «well-known royalty» inherent in its sovereignty. Initially, the opposition was assumed by the ecclesiastic hierarchy and it generated jurisdictional conflicts so serious that Philip V proceeded to the emission of dispositions in favour of his royal prerogativ…

The Evaluation of Public Managers’ Performances in the Light of Italian Public Administration Reform

2011

One of the most important element in the analysis of public administration’s performances is the management. In fact it is the connection point between objectives (fixed at political level) and the system of outputs and outcomes, achieved by public personnel at different levels. This is the main reason why during the last decades, the reform of Italian public administration has concentrated on improving public action performances, by a regulation of public management and the connected introduction of two key words: autonomy and accountability. This means that managers should be endowed of greater autonomy in the execution of their managerial activities and, at the same time, they are fully …

Exposure to Androstenes Influences Processing of Emotional Words

2018

This article is part of the Research Topic 'The Importance of Olfaction in Intra- and Interspecific Communication'; International audience; There is evidence that human-produced androstenes affect attitudinal, emotional, and physiological states in a context-dependent manner, suggesting that they could be involved in modulating social interactions. For instance, androstadienone appears to increase attention specifically to emotional information. Most of the previous work focused on one or two androstenes. Here, we tested whether androstenes affect linguistic processing, using three different androstene compounds. Participants (90 women and 77 men) performed a lexical decision task after bei…

Euro Area Structural Convergence? A Multi-Criterion Cluster Analysis

2015

Abstract This paper proposes a classification of the old member countries of the euro area in a structural data rich environment and run a convergence analysis using the same framework. First, we use a clustering approach and identify two structurally distinct clusters of countries that are not modified between 1999 and 2012: the South Countries Group (SCG) – composed of Greece, Italy, Portugal and Spain – and the Other Countries Group (OCG). Second, we propose a convergence metrics and reach three key findings: (i) increase over time of the between-clusters׳ dispersion; (ii) diverging demographics and innovation performance into the OCG, and (iii) an unfortunate convergence towards high la…

Key Drivers of Mobile Commerce Adoption. An Exploratory Study of Spanish Mobile Users

2007

Despite dramatic differences between non-store shoppers were discovered, very limited research has been conducted to examine them. This paper analyses the background of M-commerce and key drivers of future Mcommerce decision among Spanish mobile users. Our objective is two-fold: (1) to determine the influence of relations with the Mobile (frequency of Mobile use, length of Mobile use and Mobile affinity), demographics, non-store shopping previous experience (mail, catalogue, Television and Internet) and attitude to M-commerce and its influence on the M-commerce decision and (2) to identify key drivers of future M-commerce intention. We examined data from 606 personal interviews given to Spa…
