Una anoressia “infiammatoria”
2020
Crohn's disease (CD) is an inflammatory disease with a chronic relapsing course and a wide spectrum of manifestations that sometimes overlaps the symptoms of other pathologies. The paper describes the case of a girl with anorexia and a following diagnosis of CD.

Advances of Research in Education and ICT in Hospital Classrooms
2017

The scientific literature demonstrates the fundamental role played by the inclusion of certain psychological variables in the training plan. This study examined the psychological profile of kayak polo players through the variables of burnou…
Data from: Primary production calculations for sea ice from bio-optical observations in the Baltic Sea
2017
Bio-optics is a powerful approach for estimating photosynthesis rates, but has seldom been applied to sea ice, where measuring photosynthesis is a challenge. We measured absorption coefficients of chromophoric dissolved organic matter (CDOM), algae, and non-algal particles along with solar radiation, albedo and transmittance at four sea-ice stations in the Gulf of Finland, Baltic Sea. This unique compilation of optical and biological data for Baltic Sea ice was used to build a radiative transfer model describing the light field and the light absorption by algae in 1-cm increments. The maximum quantum yields and photoadaptation of photosynthesis were determined from 14C-incorporation in phot…
Dependence of T-lymphocyte activation on the extent of cellular damage
2010
Mechanically damaged cells release intracellular substances, resulting in the activation of CD4- and CD8-positive T-lymphocytes. The goal of this investigation was to quantify and compare fractions of activated CD4- and CD8-positive T-lymphocytes, based on the quantity of damaged cells in a given blood sample. Blood samples were mechanically stressed by vortexing intensely. Subsequently, different quantities of distressed blood samples were mixed with samples of fresh, whole blood. Afterwards, the extent of CD4- and CD8-positive T-cell activation was examined in the mixture by flow cytometry. Sine-like curves of T-cell activation were observed for both CD4- (T-helper mediated) and CD8- (cyt…
B and T cell immune responses elicited by the BNT162b2 (Pfizer–BioNTech) COVID-19 vaccine in nursing home residents
2021
ABSTRACTObjectivesThe immunogenicity of the BNT162b2 COVID-19 vaccine is understudied in elderly people with comorbidities. We assessed SARS-CoV-2-S-targeted antibody and T cell responses following full vaccination in nursing home residents (NHR).MethodsWe recruited 60 NHR (44 female; median age, 87.5 years), of whom 10 had previously had COVID-19, and 18 healthy controls (15 female; median age, 48.5 years). Pre- and post-vaccination blood specimens were available for quantitation of total antibodies binding RBD and enumeration of SARS-CoV-2-S-reactive IFN-γ CD4+ and CD8+ T cells by flow cytometry.ResultsThe seroconversion rate in presumably SARS-CoV-2 naïve NHR (95.3%), either with or with…
Cigarette smoke alters primary human bronchial epithelial cell (PBEC) differentiation atAir-Liquid Interface (ALI): role of Oct-4, CD146 and CD105
2017
The airway epithelium is a dynamic tissue that undergoes slow but constant renewal. Dysregulation of airway epithelial cell function related to cigarette smoke (CS) exposure plays an important role in the pathophysiology of COPD. Oct-4 is the crucial POU domain transcription factor responsible for maintaining cellular self-renewal and regeneration, and CD146 and CD105 are adhesion molecule involved in cellular proliferation, differentiation, epithelial-mesenchymal transition and tissue remodelling. Bronchial biopsy specimens (BBs) were obtained from 9 healthy controls (C) and 9 COPD. ALI cultures of PBEC from C were exposed to CS extract (CSE) for 7, 14, 21 days. Oct-4, CD105 and CD146 expr…
Overview of the second international workshop to define swine cluster of differentiation (CD) antigens
1998
The aim of the Second International Swine Cluster of Differentiation (CD) Workshop, supported by the Veterinary Immunology Committee (VIC) of the International Union of Immunological Societies (IUIS), was to standardize the assignment of monoclonal antibodies (mAb) reactive with porcine leukocyte differentiation antigens and to define new antibody clusters. At the summary meeting of the workshop in July, 1995, revisions in the existing nomenclature for the Swine CD were approved, so that the rules are now in accord with those for human and ruminant CD. Swine CD numbers will now be given to clusters of mAb to swine orthologues of human CD molecules when homology is proven by (1) suitable tis…
Humoral immunotherapy of multiple myeloma: perspectives and perplexities
2010
IMPORTANCE OF THE FIELDS Multiple myeloma (MM) is a hematological malignancy still remaining incurable despite the various therapies available, mainly because of the high fraction of refractory/relapsing cases. Therefore, the development of novel therapeutic approaches is urgently needed to overcome conventional treatment resistance. AREAS COVERED IN THIS REVIEW: In the era of targeted therapies, treatments combining a high specificity for neoplastic cells and the capability to interfere with environmental signals should be regarded as the weapons of choice. Monoclonal antibody (mAb)-based humoral immunotherapy could satisfy both these requirements when applied to MM. Indeed, many of the mo…
