Image guidance to improve reliability and data integrity of transcranial Doppler sonography.
2012
Abstract Background Principles and accuracy of image-guided transcranial Doppler (IG TCD) sonography have been published recently. However, it remains open whether combination of image guidance and TCD offers an additional clinical advantage. This study scores the accuracy of conventional TCD examinations and investigates the potential improvement of TCD data integrity and reliability regarding the additional use of IG. Methods Conventional TCD was performed by a group of experienced investigators, who were blinded to images of a navigation system tracking the Doppler probe, whereas an independent observer documented the TCD findings, acquired by the investigators, due to saving spatial dat…
Innovations in the Art of Microneurosurgery for Reaching Deep-Seated Cerebral Lesions.
2019
Deep-seated cerebral lesions have fascinated and frustrated countless surgical innovators since the dawn of the microneurosurgical era. To determine the optimal approach, the microneurosurgeon must take into account the characteristics and location of the pathological lesion as well as the operator's range of technical expertise. Increasingly, microneurosurgeons must select between multiple operative corridors that can provide access to the surgical target. Innovative trajectories have emerged for many indications that provide more flexible operative angles and superior exposure but result in longer working distances and more technically demanding maneuvers. In this article, we highlight 4 …
Prevention and treatment of intracranial hypertension
2007
Intracranial pressure (ICP) is the pressure exerted by cranial contents on the dural envelope. It comprises the partial pressures of brain, blood and cerebrospinal fluid (CSF). Normal intracranial pressure is somewhere below 10 mmHg; it may increase as a result of traumatic brain injury, stroke, neoplasm, Reye's syndrome, hepatic coma, or other pathologies. When ICP increases above 20 mmHg it may damage neurons and jeopardize cerebral perfusion. If such a condition persists, treatment is indicated. Control of ICP requires measurement, which can only be performed invasively. Standard techniques include direct ventricular manometry or measurement in the parenchyma with electronic or fiberopti…
Tonographic Effect of Ocular Response Analyzer in Comparison to Goldmann Applanation Tonometry.
2016
AIMS The tonographic effect is a phenomenon of intraocular pressure (IOP) reduction following repeated tonometry. This study examines whether the tonographic effect occurs following IOP measurement performed with Ocular Response Analyzer (ORA). METHODS Both eyes of 31 glaucoma patients and 35 healthy controls underwent nine IOP-measurements performed with GAT and ORA. The number of GAT and ORA measurements performed on each eye differed depending on the randomly allocated investigation scheme. Central corneal thickness (CCT), anterior chamber volume (ACV) and anterior chamber depth (ACD) were assessed with Pentacam before and after the repeated GAT/ORA measurements. RESULTS There was no sta…
Combined inguinal hernia in the elderly. Portraying the progression of hernia disease
2016
Abstract Introduction Identification of a combined hernia is a common occurrence in the course of inguinal hernia repair. This type of protrusion disease seems to affect the elderly, in particular. Very few investigations have been carried out to ascertain the structural changes that occur in the groin affected by this clinical condition. Method Analysis of intraoperative findings of combined inguinal hernias evidenced in the elderly, from the most recent 100 groin hernia repair procedures carried out by a single operator, represents the basis of the article. Protrusions that presumably represent the forerunner of this type of hernia were also analyzed: double ipsilateral inguinal hernias c…
Iterative closure method for non-linear systems driven by polynomials of Gaussian filtered processes
2008
This paper concerns the statistical characterization of the non-Gaussian response of non-linear systems excited by polynomial forms of filtered Gaussian processes. The non-Gaussianity requires the computation of moments of any order. The problem is solved profiting from both the stochastic equivalent linearization (EL), and the moment equation approach of Ito's stochastic differential calculus through a procedure divided into two parts. The first step requires the linearization of the system, while retaining the non-linear excitation; the response statistical moments are calculated exactly, and constitute a first estimate of the moments of the actual non-linear system. In the second step, t…
Anatomic Posterolateral Knee Reconstructions Require a Popliteofibular Ligament Reconstruction Through a Tibial Tunnel
2010
Background: No biomechanical study has been performed analyzing the merits of reconstructing the popliteofibular ligament (PFL) through a tibial tunnel with an anatomic reconstruction of the posterolateral knee. Hypothesis: There is no difference in an anatomic posterolateral knee reconstruction with or without a PFL reconstruction placed through a tibial tunnel in restoring knee motion to the intact, uninjured state, and the knee is not overconstrained with this reconstruction. Study Design: Controlled laboratory study. Methods: Eight paired knees were tested in the intact state and then sectioned to simulate a grade III posterolateral knee injury. The reconstruction for the first paired …
Reclutamiento y reclutas en la ciudad de Valencia (1717-1762)
2019
This research aims to analyze recruitment by quintas, Spanish word for recruitment levies by lot, in the city of Valencia and the townships included in its jurisdictional area. The analyzed period began in 1717 with the first levie decreted by king Philip V once the War of Spanish Succession was over. Applied this levie in the kingdom of Valencia, this was the first application of levies by lot. The closing year for the reported period up to 1762, whith the last levy made by king Charles III before the establishment of the annual periodicity for the recruitment process. Procedures with which human contingents claimed to the city of Valencia between the mentioned dates were organized and dis…
Le siège de l'arbitrage international
2021
In international matters, the arbitral tribunal has no choice but to settle in the territory of a State in order to render its award. The choice of this "host State" would then determine the seat of international arbitration. But what choice do we make? How? By whom ? What to do in case of uncertainty of this choice? What effects will this determination then have in creating the tribunal, in rendering and enforcing its award, or in choosing the applicable laws? There is no single answer to these simple questions. Indeed, international arbitration law attaches varying importance to the notion of seat, in the sense that it will depend primarily on one's vision of the place and source of arbit…
