CATIONIC SLN AS TARGETING GENE DELIVERY SYSTEMS FOR HEPATOCELLULAR CARCINOMA
2014
Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is the sixth most common cancer worldwide and the third leading cause of cancer-related deaths. In the United States, the incidence of HCC has almost tripled during the past two decades and HCC has become one of the fastest growing cancers. While surgical removal of tumor tissues is an effective approach to protect relatively healthy liver tissue, it is only applicable to a small subset of HCC patients with specific pathological conditions, such as confined tumor mass without portal hypertension. Therefore, there is an urgent need to develop novel therapeutic strategies to treat this deadly disease. Systemic tumor-targeted gene delivery is attracting increasin…

A spatially homogeneous mathematical model of immune cancer competition
2015
This paper deals with the modeling of interactions between the immune system and cancer cells, in the framework of the mathematical kinetic theory for active particles. The model assumes spatial homogeneity and continue values of the activity of cancer and immune cells.

The role of extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) on aerobic granules formation: comparison between a case of synthetic wastewater supply and anot…
2015
The paper focused on the evolution of extracellular polymeric substances (EPSs) content during the granulation process in two Granular Sequencing Batch Airlift Reactors (GSBAR) (3,5 L) fed with synthetic and industrial wastewater. Results showed that EPSs, in particular proteins (PN) were mainly produced during the feast phase because of high substrate availability, especially under conditions of metabolic stress. Than EPSs content reduced during the famine period. More in detail, during the granulation process, a greater polysaccharides (PS) consumption occurred in both reactors, while PN content reduced significantly only in R2. As a result PN/PS ratio increased significantly during granu…
