In the present study the release of proteins degrading extracellular matrix compounds to circulation was measured after damaging exercise in humans. Hepatocellular carcinoma: one world, one cancer—different guidelines?

Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is a healthcare challenge in virtually all parts of the world. Therefore, it is no wonder that different guidelines have been developed reflecting expert consensus on the management of HCC in different regions, namely guidelines from the American Association for the Study of Liver Diseases (AASLD) for the USA (1,2), the Asian Pacific Association for the Study of the Liver (APASL) for the Asia-Pacific region (3), the European Association for the Study of the Liver (EASL) for Europe (4), and the Japan Society of Hepatology (JSH) for Japan (5,6). In 2018 an update of the EASL clinical practice guidelines (CPG) will appear.

A suspected case of hunting accident. Case report

Nowadays, the use of molecular biology in forensics has made it possible to identify human victim and sometimes even the circumstances under which the death occurred through. In our case, a corpse of a 50-years old man with a gunshot wound was found in the woods. The suspected murderer declared that it had been a hunting accident while he shot a wild boar. During the autopsy, a bullet (Borra-bullet Gualandi, 32 gr) was found in the abdomen of the victim. Brain oedema is an important factor which compromises maintenance of the cerebral blood flow. Conversely, primary blood flow disturbances are leading to brain oedema. The mechanisms underlying blood flow impairment by brain oedema are associated with an increased regional tissue pressure in proportion to the degree of water accumulation in the parenchyma. AIMS We assessed the morbidity, mortality and efficacy of cryotherapy for primary and secondary malignant liver tumours in a prospective case control study. METHODS Since 1996 we performed 77 cryosurgical procedures on 71 patients. 6 patients had hepatocellular carcinoma, the remainders metastases, mainly of colorectal origin (n = 49). Cryotherapy was used when a complete tumour resection was not feasible, but complete tumour destruction by cryotherapy seemed possible. Mean follow-up was 21 months.
