Estimation of the elastic constants of highly porous cellular plastics reinforced with fibres embedded in foam struts

2015

In order to enhance the mechanical properties of polymer foams, fillers of different materials and sizes are being applied. Fibrous fillers shorter than the characteristic foam cell dimensions have the potential of efficient reinforcement, due to their high aspect ratio, without detrimentally interfering with foam structure. A theoretical model is developed for evaluation of the effect of filler on foam stiffness. The elastic response of rigid polymer foams filled with short fibres, of length commensurable with that of foam struts, is modelled by using the orientational averaging technique. Explicit expressions for components of the stiffness tensor of composite foams are derived in terms …

Formation of nanorods by self-assembly of alkyl-substituted polyphenylene dendrimers on graphite

2000

Alkyl-substituted polyphenylene dendrimers with a tetrahedral or disk-like shape form self-assembled monolayers on graphite (HOPG) which show complex supramolecular structures, such as parallel rods of 6 nm diameter or two-dimensional crystals.

Different kinds of solid solutions in the V2O5-ZrSiO4-NaF system by sol-gel processes and their characterization

1993

Abstract In the V2O5-ZrSiO4-NaF system, three kinds of substances have been identified by sol-gel methods depending on the V2O5 amounts in the composition. Their characterization by X-ray diffraction, measurements of unit cell parameters, UV-visible (UV-V) spectroscopy, differential thermal analysis and lab colour parameter determination allow the consideration of three kinds of solid solution in the zircon lattice: (a) V+5,V+4-ZrSiO4, thermally stable and with a deep green colour; (b) V+4-ZrSiO4, thermally stable and blue coloured, made by the sol-gel method and with V2O5 amounts lower than 0·03 mol per formula weight; and (c) Na+,F−,V+4-ZrSiO4, a solid solution with a deep blue-turquoise …

Compatibilization of polyethylene/polyamide 6 blend nanocomposite films

2015

Polymer blends of incompatible components need to undergo compatibilization, in order to give rise to a blend with good physical properties. At the same way, polymer/clay nanocomposites show this problem because of different chemical nature of the polymer matrix and of the clay. Compatibilization is therefore more necessary if an incompatible polymer blend is filled with an organomodified clay in order to give a final material with good properties. In this work, a polyethylene/polyamide 6 blend filled with an organomodified clay has been compatibilized with a maleic anhydride grafted SEBS (styrene-ethylene-butylene-styrene) copolymer and a glicidylmethacrylate-ethylene copolymer. The result…

Strain rate effect in the single-fiber-fragmentation test

2001

The single fiber fragmentation test (SFFT) has been widely used to characterize the interface in fiber-reinforced polymers. The purpose of the work reported here was to determine the effect of strain rate on the fiber fragment lengths obtained in the SFFT. Three materials systems were used to make single-fiber-composite specimens: E-glass fiber/polycarbonate matrix, AS4-carbon fiber/polycarbonate matrix, and AU4-carbon fiber/polycarbonate matrix. The fiber-matrix adhesion in all three systems is based on physisorption rather than chemisorption. Each system was tested at strain rates ranging over four orders of magnitude. Results are reported in terms of fragment length, the dependent variab…

Calculation of Dependent Elastic Constants of Plastic Foams with a Pronounced Strut-Like Structure

2003

Seven dependent elastic constants of monotropic plastic foams with an expressed strut-like structure are calculated. For this purpose, the basic results of the previously elaborated mathematical model for light-weight plastic foams is used. The model includes a model cell of local structure for monotropic/isotropic plastic foams and an ensemble of structural elements, which allows one to calculate the seven dependent elastic constants, taking into account the pronounced polydispersity of the structure of plastic foams. The numerical values of the constants are compared with the available experimental data, and a satisfactory agreement is found to exist. As a final result, a full set of gene…

Architecture, self-assembly and properties of well-defined hybrid polymers based on polyhedral oligomeric silsequioxane (POSS)

2013

Abstract Well-defined hybrid polymers based on polyhedral oligomeric silsequioxane (POSS) with a variety of architectures have been developed, including telechelic polymers, block copolymers and star-shaped polymers. The synthesis, self-assembly and properties of this kind of materials are reviewed. Well-defined POSS-containing hybrid polymers can be constructed by living polymerization techniques, such as ring-opening polymerization and living free-radical polymerization or the combination of living polymerization and coupling reactions, such as click chemistry and hydrosilylation. The self-assembly behavior of well-defined POSS-containing hybrid polymers is also described in detail. The P…

Composites of ethylene-vinyl acetate copolymers with modified magnesium hydroxide-thermo-oxidative ageing

2014

Flame retardant composites must perform their protective roles permanently, also under conditions of intermittent or long-term exposure to sunlight, moisture or increased temperature. The aim of our work was characterization of the thermo-oxidative ageing (90 °C) and the changes in flammability of ethylene-vinyl acetate copolymer composites with 40 and 60 wt.% of magnesium hydroxide. The neat polymer and its composites were investigated for their thermal (DSC) and structural (FTIR) characteristics as well as their density, melt flow index, tensile properties and combustibility during ageing test. As FTIR results identified the different carbonyl groups in copolymer were created, the highest…

Linear–dendritic block copolymers: The state of the art and exciting perspectives

2011

Concurrent with the rapid development of both dendrimers and hyperbranched polymers, a novel class of block copolymer architectures has emerged from the combination of these dendritic architectures with linear chains, the “linear–dendritic block copolymers” (LDBCs). This review gives a comprehensive summary of the state of the art in this rapidly developing field from pioneering early work to promising recent approaches. The different strategies leading to these hybrid architectures with either perfect dendrimer/dendron building blocks or imperfect, yet more conveniently accessible hyperbranched segments, are reviewed and compared. The consequences of the unusual polymer topology for supramo…

Complete in-plane elastic characterisation under tensile tests of angle-ply laminates composed of polymer-matrix layers

2002

In this paper we present a new strategy to completely characterise the in-plane elastic properties of a large range of angle-ply laminates using only unidirectional tests. We consider laminates having the same number of identical plies in the α and – α directions. This new method uses some preceding results found by Verchery for orthotropic laminates, namely the conditions of existence of a specific direction ω, in which the shear-extension coupling is null. The characterisation of the laminate is then made using the results of three tensile tests: two in the orthotropy axes, and the third one in the ω direction, in order to have always a pure one-dimensional state of stress. We show that …
