Optimization of MCM-41 type silica nanoparticles for biological applications: Control of size and absence of aggregation and cell cytotoxicity

2015

Abstract Mesoporous silica nanoparticles were synthesized at high pH using CTAB as a template and TEOS as a silica precursor. It was shown that varying the NaOH concentration between 5 and 27.5 mM allows the size, pore and silica structure of mesoporous nanoparticles to be precisely tuned. In particular, monodisperse nanoparticles with the MCM-41 structure with size ranging from 90 nm to 450 nm were obtained by increasing the NaOH concentration from 12.5 to 22.5 mM. It thus demonstrates that NaOH concentration must range between 12.5 and 15 mM in order to prepare MCM-41 silica nanoparticles with optimal size for nanovectorization. We also found that under usual conditions the aggregation of…

Citrate–nitrate auto-combustion synthesis of perovskite-type nanopowders: A systematic approach

2009

Abstract Citrate–nitrate auto-combustion synthesis is used to prepare an iron, a cobalt and a cerium-perovskite. The influence of different synthesis conditions on the combustion process, phase composition, textural and morphological properties is studied in detail by X-ray diffraction, nitrogen adsorption and scanning electron microscopy. Results show that the combustion intensity increases from iron, to cerium, to cobalt-perovskite. Conversely, the combustion intensity decreases and thus the safety and the gain of the combustion process increase by using high fuel/oxidant ratios, low pH values or combustion reactors with high heat dispersion capacity. High fuel/oxidant ratios increase par…

Yttrium-doped hematite photoanodes for solar water splitting: Photoelectrochemical and electronic properties

2018

Abstract We investigate yttrium-doped hematite thin-film photoelectrochemical properties and find yttrium incorporation to amply improve the performance as a photoanode for water splitting under visible light. We used the spray pyrolysis method to prepare a set of yttrium doped Fe2-xYxO3 (x = 0, 0.05, 0.10, 0.15, 0.2) thin films (thickness below 500 nm) on glass and transparent conductive oxide coated glass slides. Using a substitutional homovalent (Y3+) dopant, the effect on functionality is rationalised as a combined effect on the electronic structure and small polaron mobility from the lattice structure, impurity levels, lattice stability and variance in hybridisation. The photoelectroch…

Large scale synthesis of nanostructured zirconia-based compounds from freeze-dried precursors

2013

Nanocrystalline zirconia powders have been obtained at the multigram scale by thermal decomposition of precursors resulting from the freeze-drying of aqueous acetic solutions. This technique has equally made possible to synthesize a variety of nanostructured yttria or scandia doped zirconia compositions. SEM images, as well as the analysis of the XRD patterns, show the nanoparticulated character of those solids obtained at low temperature, with typical particle size in the 10–15 nm range when prepared at 673 K. The presence of the monoclinic, the tetragonal or both phases depends on the temperature of the thermal treatment, the doping concentration and the nature of the dopant. In addition,…

SYNTHESIS AND CHARACTERIZATION OF SB-SUBSTITUTED (K0.5Na0.5)NbO3 PIEZOELECTRIC CERAMICS

2008

ABSTRACT Lead-free piezoelectric ceramics (K0.5Na0.5)(Nb1-xSbx)O3+0.5 mol.%MnO2, where x = 0 ÷ 0.10, with single phase structure and rhombohedral symmetry at room temperature were prepared by conventional ceramic technology. The optimal sintering temperatures of compositions were within 1100°–1140°C. MnO2 functions as a sintering aid and effectively improves the densification. The samples reached density from 4.26 g/cm3 for undoped (K0.5Na0.5)NbO3 to 4.40 g/cm3 for Mn/Sb5+ co-doped ceramics. The co-effects of MnO2 doping and Sb5+ substitution lead to significant improvement in dielectric and piezoelectric properties: e at the Tc increased from 6000 (KNN) to 12400 (x = 0.04), d33 = 92 ÷ 192 …

Crystallization and upconversion luminescence of distorted fluorite nanocrystals in Ba2+ containing oxyfluoride glass ceramics

2016

Abstract In this study novel Er 3+ -doped transparent glass ceramics were prepared from melt-quenched glasses with general composition of Na 2 O-NaF-BaF 2 -YF 3 -Al 2 O 3 -SiO 2 . The phase composition of the annealed glass ceramics strongly depends on the BaF 2 content in glass matrix. Crystallization of β-NaYF 4 , cubic fluorite type, tetragonal nanocrystals and rhombohedral Ba 4 Y 3 F 17 was observed. An introduction of BaF 2 in the glass matrix suppresses the crystallization of β-NaYF 4 , promotes the formation of Ba 2+ containing fluoride phases and reduces the cross-relaxation between Er 3+ ions in fluoride crystals. Small rate of the nonradiative processes and low local symmetry of r…

SINTERING OF LEAD-FREE (K0.5Na0.5)NbO3 BASED SOLID SOLUTION

2009

ABSTRACT In this study lead-free solid solution (K0.5Na0.5)NbO3 was prepared, structure, dielectric parameters of ceramics were investigated. The doping of sintering aids did not affect the crystallographic structure of the ceramics significantly; all ceramic samples had a single-phase perovskite structure. Added elements CdO, ZnO, MnO2, V2O5 effectively decreased the sintering temperature of KNN by 50°–80°C. All sintering aids influenced sinterability, microstructure and dielectric properties of ceramics. Dielectric constant for doped samples increased from 6000 up to 8000; Pr = 15 μC/cm2, Ec = 9 kV/cm, d33 = 110 pC/N, kp = 0.38 and Qm = 190 for MnO2 doped samples.

Solid state bonding in extrusion and FSW: process mechanics and analogies

2006

Abstract The solid state bonding occurring in extrusion and in friction stir welding (FSW) processes is investigated through FEM models previously developed and validated. In particular, for the AA6082-T6 aluminum alloys, the most relevant field variables have been monitored and compared, such as strain, strain rate, effective stress and pressure. The aim of the research is the development of an effective FSW bonding criterion.

Double implantation in silica glass for metal cluster composite formation: a study by synchrotron radiation techniques

2001

Silica glass containing metal clusters is studied for both basic and applied aspects, related to the physics of cluster formation and to the optical properties of these materials. To obtain such composite structure, Cu+ Ni, Au+ Cu, Au+ Ag, Cu+ Co, and Cu+ Ag sequential implantations in fused silica were realized. The resulting systems, after possible annealing in various atmospheres, were studied by synchrotron radiation-based techniques, namely, extended X-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS) spectroscopy, grazing incidence X-ray diffraction (GIXRD), and grazing incidence small angle X-ray scattering (GISAXS). The unique potential of these techniques is the capability to investigate dilut…
