Mechanical properties of pultruded glass fiber-reinforced plastic after moistening

2012

Abstract The kinetics of moisture sorption under immersion in water at room and elevated temperatures and flexural characteristics of dry (conditionally initial) and wet (moistened up to saturation level) composite material were investigated on flat specimens of polyester based glass fiber-reinforced plastic, cut from I-beam pultruded profile. It was found that the coefficients of diffusion and swelling are different in three principal axis of the composite. The former have the largest value in fiber axis direction, but the latter – in transverse to fiber axis direction out of plane of the layers. The observed difference in kinetics of mass gain and change of volume strain for the specimens…

Microanalytical characterization of decorations in handmade ancient floor tiles using inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometry (ICP-O…

2013

In this study a total of 114 glazed decorations of 42 ceramic floor tiles, manufactured in Sicily fromthe 16th to 19 the 21th AD, were investigated. The micro sampling method, proposed by us, using a cotton swab soaked in hydrofluoric acid, includes advantages of high sensitivity, high selectivity, simplicity, speed, not expensive and can be considered non-destructive because the point of sampling remains invisible to the human eye. ICP-OES technique was used in this study. Twenty-four elements (Al, As, B, Be, Ba, Ca, Cd, Co, Cr, Cu, Fe, K, Mg, Mn, Mo, Ni, Pb, Sb, Se, Si, Sn, Ti, V and Zn) were determined in each colored enamel. Enameled decorations in Sicilian tiles were varied in tones an…

Estimation of the tensile strength of an oriented flax fiber-reinforced polymer composite

2011

Unidirectional orientation of natural fibers in a polymer composite ensures the highest efficiency of reinforcement. Flax fiber reinforcement is discontinuous due to limited fiber length and heterogeneous due to the presence of elementary fibers and their bundles. In order to assess the upper limit of tensile strength of such slightly misoriented, nominally UD natural fiber composite, a statistical strength model of continuous UD fiber reinforced composites is applied. It is found that the experimental strength of UD flax composites, produced from rovings or manually aligned fibers, approaches the theoretical limit only at relatively low fiber volume fraction ca. 0.2, being markedly below i…

Very high titanium content mesoporous silicas

2001

Titanium content in mesoporous titanosilicate catalysts has been modulated up to a minimum Si/Ti value of 1.9 by using complexing agents able to coordinate both Si and Ti atoms and harmonize the reactivity of the resulting precursors avoiding subsequent phase segregation and leading to chemically very homogeneous materials. Intercalation of decamethylferrocenium cations in bimetallic oxalate-bridged two-dimensional magnets

1997

The structure and magnetic properties of novel hybrid molecule-based magnets formed by combination of two magnetically active sublattices, the bimetallic oxalatobridged honeycomb net [MnIIMIII(ox)3] (MII = Mn, Fe, Co, Cr, Ni, Cu; MIII = Cr, Fe) and the organometallic cation decamethylferrocenium, are reported. Supramolecular self-assembling in mesostructured materials through charge tuning in the inorganic phase

1998

Supramolecular self-assembling of organic CTA+ micelles and inorganic [VO(H2O)PO4]n^q-2 2D-anions for the isolation of hexagonal mesostructured materials can be reached by charge tuning in the inorganic phase through the adjustment of the vanadium mean oxidation state. Temperature control during Spark Plasma Sintering and application to up-scaling and complex shaping

2013

International audience; The determination and the homogeneity of the sample temperature during consolidation of powders by Spark Plasma Sintering (SPS) are addressed. Densifications were carried out in three different facilities differing by their constructors and their size. A structural transformation activated in a TiAl alloy was used as a marker of the sample temperature and finite element modeling were performed to evaluate the temperature at each point of the set-up. A good agreement between experimental and simulated data is exhibited. Alloys with identical microstructures were sintered and the homogeneity of the microstructure was better in the largest machines or when the sample wa…

Influence of vinyltriethoxysilane concentration on structural and luminescent characteristics of cerium doped yttrium based silicate phosphors

2015

Abstract Cerium doped yttrium silicates phosphors (YSO:Ce) were prepared by gel combustion using vinyltriethoxysilane (VTEOS) as silicon sources along with aspartic acid as fuel and yttrium-cerium nitrate as oxidizer. The study presents the influence of VTEOS amount in the synthesis mixture on the structural and luminescent characteristics of silicate phosphors. The understanding of precursor׳s decomposition was achieved on the basis of thermal analysis in association with gas evolved analysis. XRD, FTIR and XPS were used to reveal the structural changes that occur with VTEOS molar amount variation from 1 to 3 mol. It was found that the main crystalline phase was X2-Y 2 SiO 5 . The luminesc…
