Methodology in specimen fabrication for in vitro dental studies: Standardization of extracted tooth preparation
2017
Background Specimen preparation for in vitro study suffers a general lack of methodological homogeneity, as well as a lack of uniformity in the materials selected for fabricating them. This situation prevents comparisons between studies. When a specimen is not of dental origin it is not possible to study adhesion or bonding techniques realistically. The objective is to design and implement a method of specimen preparation that permits universal standardization for use in in vitro studies. Material and Methods A metal stump of specified dimensions was designed and fabricated by hand. It was scanned, the data digitalized, perfecting and standardizing the dimensions. Ten human molars were adap…
Are different generations of CAD/CAM milling machines capable to produce restorations with similar quality?
2016
Background: Different CAD/CAM machinesâ generation may impact the restoration overall quality. The present study evaluated the marginal fit of CAD/CAM restorations manufactured with different generations of CEREC milling unit systems. Material and Methods: Sixteen typodont teeth were divided into two groups (n=8) according to the machineâ s generation assigned. These are control group (G1): Cerec AC with Bluecam/Cerec 3 milling unit and (G2): Cerec AC with Bluecam/MC XL Premium Package milling unit. Scanning of the preparation were performed and crowns were milled using the Vita Mark II blocks. Blocks were cemented using epoxy glue on the pulpal floor only and finger pressure applied for 1 …
Indirect evaluation of pit and fissure sealants: a 3D-based method validation
2019
Background The aim of the present study was to compare indirect methods to assess the clinical performance of pit and fissure sealants and validate the use of 3D scanners. Material and Methods Sample consisted of 58 plaster models of upper and lower first permanent molars, sealed with resin sealants, as well as photographs obtained during the 18-month follow-up. Pre-established criteria were applied to categorize the sealant presence/absence and marginal integrity. Two calibrated examiners performed the evaluations, independently, using Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM; gold-standard), Photography, 3D (CEREC In Lab) and Stereomicroscope analysis. Results The intra-examiner Spearman correla…
