Diabetes mellitus: Polymorphonuclear leukocyte (PMN) filtration parameters and PMN membrane fluidity after chemotactic activation
1999
Abstract The goal of this research was to determine leukocyte rheology at baseline and after chemotactic activation in type I and type II diabetics. In 19 normal subjects, 21 type I diabetics, and 16 type II diabetics at baseline and after in vitro chemotactic activation (prolonged for 5 and 15 minutes) with two stimulating agents (4-phorbol 12-myristate 13-acetate [PMA] and N -formyl-methionyl-leucyl-phenylalanine [fMLP]), we evaluated polymorphonuclear (PMN) filtration parameters (using a St. George filtrometer [Carri-Med, Dorking, UK] and considering the initial relative flow rate [IRFR] and the concentration of clogging particles [CP]) and PMN membrane fluidity (obtained by marking PMNs…
Effect of oestrogen/gestagen replacement therapy on liver enzymes in patients with Ullrich-Turner syndrome.
1995
The absence of breast development and the prevention of osteoporosis in Ullrich-Turner syndrome (UTS) require oestrogen/gestagen substitution therapy. In 8 out of 35 (23%) patients with UTS treated with conjugated equine oestrogens and cyclically with norethisterone acetate, the serum liver enzymes increased to conspicuous levels (AST 35; 20-73 U/l, ALT 92; 37-141 U/l, GGT 77; 25-227 U/l, [median; min-max]). These findings were compared with those in 41 tall girls who received a six-fold larger dose of conjugated equine oestrogens for the reduction of final height. None of these 41 girls showed abnormal serum liver enzyme levels. The conspicuous rise in serum liver enzyme levels occurred in…

Docetaxel and oxaliplatin in the second-line treatment of platinum-sensitive recurrent ovarian cancer: a phase II study.
2007
ABSTRACT Background A prospective phase II study was conducted to evaluate the efficacy and toxicity of the combination docetaxel (Taxotere) (DTX) and oxaliplatin (OXA) in ovarian cancer patients recurring after a platinum-free interval (PFI) >12 months. Patients and methods DTX, 75 mg/m2, was administered by 60 min i.v. infusion, followed by OXA, 100 mg/m2, given by a 2 h i.v., on day 1 every 21 days. Results From October 2003 to June 2006, 43 ovarian cancer patients were enrolled. Median PFI was 26 months. All patients were available for response evaluation: 17 complete responses and 12 partial responses were registered, for an overall response rate of 67.4%. The median response duration …
Treatment of hyperandrogenic alopecia in women
2003
Many women with androgenic alopecia have normal circulating androgen levels. Increased scalp sensitivity to androgens may account for these cases. Even when androgen levels are increased, no particular pattern has emerged. Classical anti-androgen measures have proved disappointing, in contrast to the results obtained in women with hirsutism or acne. This study evaluated flutamide and finasteride in 36 premenopausal, hyperandrogenic women presenting with androgenic alopecia. Frontal hair thinning was assessed in photos of the frontoparietal region using the Ludwig grading system. Thirty ovulatory women matched for age and body weight served as a control group. Groups of 12 subjects received …
Ulipristal acetate versus leuprolide acetate for uterine fibroids
2012
A b s t r ac t Background The efficacy and side-effect profile of ulipristal acetate as compared with those of leuprolide acetate for the treatment of symptomatic uterine fibroids before surgery are unclear. Methods In this double-blind noninferiority trial, we randomly assigned 307 patients with symptomatic fibroids and excessive uterine bleeding to receive 3 months of daily therapy with oral ulipristal acetate (at a dose of either 5 mg or 10 mg) or once-monthly intramuscular injections of leuprolide acetate (at a dose of 3.75 mg). The primary outcome was the proportion of patients with controlled bleeding at week 13, with a prespecified noninferiority margin of −20%. Results Uterine bleed…
Editorial: Clinical Trials in Raynaud's Phenomenon: A Spoonful of Sugar (Pill) Makes the Medicine Go Down (in Flames)
2017
Objective To determine the effect of selexipag, an oral, selective IP prostacyclin receptor agonist, on the frequency of attacks of Raynaud's phenomenon (RP) in patients with systemic sclerosis (SSc). Methods Patients with SSc‐related RP were randomized 1:1 to placebo (n = 38) or selexipag (n = 36) in individualized doses (maximum of 1,600 μg twice daily) during a 3‐week titration period. The primary end point was the weekly average number of RP attacks during the study maintenance period, analyzed using a Bayesian approach with a negative binomial model adjusted for baseline number of RP attacks. Other outcome measures included Raynaud's Condition Score (RCS), RP attack duration, and treat…
Postrenal anuria in pelvic or acetabular injury: a report of three cases.
1996
Renal failure due to obstruction by a retroperitoneal hematoma is a rarely discussed complication in pelvic or acetabular fractures. Three cases of this obstructive uropathy are presented. They were successfully treated with removal of the hematoma and draining of the retroperitoneal space.
Occupational hygiene in terms of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and bioaerosols at two solid waste management plants in Finland
2012
Abstract Factors affecting occupational hygiene were measured at the solid waste transferring plant at Hyvinkaa and at the optic separation plant in Hameenlinna. Measurements consisted of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and bioaerosols including microbes, dust and endotoxins. The most abundant compounds in both of the plants were aliphatic and aromatic hydrocarbons, esters of carboxylic acids, ketones and terpenes. In terms of odour generation, the most important emissions were acetic acid, 2,3-butanedione, ethyl acetate, alpha-pinene and limonene due to their low threshold odour concentrations. At the optic waste separation plant, limonene occurred at the highest concentration of all sin…
Docetaxel plus prednisone in patients with metastatic hormone-refractory prostate cancer: An Italian clinical experience
2011
Aims and Background: We investigated the efficacy of docetaxel plus prednisone in Italian patients with metastatic hormone- refractory prostate cancer (mHRPC). Methods: Twenty four patients with mHRPC received docetaxel 75 mg/m2 every 3 weeks plus prednisone 5 mg twice daily for up to six cycles. The primary endpoint was efficacy measured by a reduction in serum prostate specific antigen (PSA) levels and measurable disease. Evaluation of toxicity, quality of life and reduction of pain were secondary endpoints. Results: PSA response was seen in 18 patients (75%). We observed a partial response in 2 patients (8.3%), stable disease in 10 patients (41.7%), and disease progression in 12 patients…
