Light-mediated host searching strategies in a fish ectoparasite, Argulus foliaceus L. (crustacea: branchiura).

Argulus foliaceus, an obligate fish ectoparasite, can search for its hosts in both light and dark conditions and uses vision in the light. We have examined what searching mode is used at night, when the infection rate was at its highest, and which stimuli produced by the fish are most important. A change of illumination produced a clear difference in the searching behaviour of adult Argulus females. The mean swimming speed and the area explored were 3-4 times higher in the dark, when the parasite employed a cruising search strategy. Phenolic Extract from Sonchus oleraceus L. Protects Diabetes-related Liver Injury in Rats through TLR4/NF-κB Signaling Pathway

Sonchus oleraceus Linn. is of great interest in scientific platform because it exhibits significant biological activities. This study investigated the liver protective effects and mechanism of phenolic extract from S. oleraceus (SOL) on Streptozotocin (STZ)-induced diabetic rats. SOL significantly increased both superoxide dismutase activity and glutathione level, while causing a reduction of malondialdehyde level in the liver. Moreover, SOL ameliorates STZ-induced liver function and pathological damages. Circumdatin H, a new inhibitor of mitochondrial NADH oxidase, from Aspergillus ochraceus

Circumdatin H (1), a new alkaloid from the culture broth of Aspergillus ochraceus, has been isolated, together with a known circumdatin, circumdatin E (2) and other known compounds: flavacol (3) and stephacidin A (4). The structure of 1 was established on the basis of chemical and spectral evidence. All of these alkaloids showed biological activity as inhibitors of the mammalian mitochondrial respiratory chain.

Type V aplasia cutis congenita in a preterm newborn successfully resolved

Aplasia cutis congenita (ACC) associated with fetus papyraceus is a rare subtype of aplasia cutis categorized as type V in Frieden's classification. It is characterized by stellate lesions in a symmetrical distribution over the trunk and proximal extremities. Conservative treatment is recommended, but there is not a well-defined therapeutic protocol. We report the case of a type V ACC in a preterm male newborn with lesions on the trunk and scalp successfully treated with topical 1% silver sulfadiazine and petrolatum gauze with an excellent evolution. This case associates a severe affectation of the scalp which represents a rare variant of type V ACC.

The capacity of bee pollen as a substrate for production of ochratoxin A (OTA) by a strain of Aspergillus ochraceus was studied. For control purposes corn, wheat and rice grains, and eleven liquid media were assayed. They were Yeast Extract Sucrose broth (YES), YES supplemented with 0.05, 0.1, 0.5, 1 and 5% bee pollen, YES supplemented with 0.5% peptone, 50% must, Wickerham medium, Aflatoxin Production medium and Coconut Broth Medium. Impact of non-selective fungicides on the growth and production of ochratoxin A byAspergillus ochraceusandA. carbonariusin barley-based medium

The aim of this study was to assess the influence of the non-selective fungicides mancozeb, copper oxychloride, and sulfur on the growth and capability for producing ochratoxin A (OTA) of ochratoxigenic isolates of Aspergillus carbonarius and A. ochraceus in barley-based medium. Lag phases and growth rates were determined for each fungicide at different doses, at 15°C and 25°C and at 0.97 a(w). Mancozeb at 40 mg l(-1 )inhibited fungal growth and provided lag phases24 days at 10-20 mg l(-1) and 15°C. OTA was observed only at 25°C and doses10 mg l(-1). Occurrence of mycotoxin producing fungi in bee pollen

The natural mycobiota occurring in bee pollen is studied in the present report with special attention to analyze the incidence of fungal species that are potential producers of mycotoxins. A total of 90 ready-to-eat bee pollen samples were analyzed. Eighty-seven samples were collected in stores placed in different Spanish areas and three were from Buenos Aires (Argentina). The statistical results (ANOVA) showed that yeasts and Penicillium spp. were the predominant fungi. Host searching in Argulus foliaceus L. (Crustacea: Branchiura): the role of vision and selectivity.

In laboratory experiments, the swimming behaviour of the ectoparasite Argulus foliaceus and its infection rates on juvenile perch (Perca fluviatilis) and roach (Rutilus rutilus) were examined. The highest infection rate and a preference for perch juveniles were obtained in darkness, the lowest infection rate and a lack of preference in the light, when aquaria with glass walls (high reflectivity) were used. In the light, when aquaria were lined with black plastic (low reflectivity) an intermediate level of infection for perch and the highest for roach was recorded.
