Supramolecular Order of Solution-Processed Perylenediimide Thin Films

2011

N,N ′ -1 H ,1 H -perfl uorobutyl dicyanoperylenecarboxydiimide (PDIF-CN 2 ), a soluble and air stable n-type molecule, undergoes signifi cant reorganization upon thermal annealing after solution deposition on several substrates with different surface energies. Interestingly, this system exhibits an exceptional edge-on orientation regardless of the substrate chemistry. This preferential orientation is rationalized in terms of strong intermolecular interactions between the PDIF-CN 2 molecules. The presence of a pronounced π– π stacking is confi rmed by combining near-edge X-ray absorption fi ne structure spectroscopy (NEXAFS), dynamic scanning force microscopy (SFM) and surface energy measure…

Orientation and Dynamics of ZnO Nanorod Liquid Crystals in Electric Fields.

2010

ZnO nanorod polymer hybrids (i.e., ZnO nanorods coated with a block copolymer with a short anchor block (dopamine) and a longer solubilizing block of polystyrene (PS)) form liquid crystalline (LC) phases if they are dispersed at high concentration e.g., in a PS oligomer matrix. Due to the high mobility of the low T(g)-matrix the nanorod polymer hybrids show a switching behavior under an applied AC electric field. Hence, the orientation of the nanorod mesogens can be changed from planar (parallel to the substrate) to homeotropic (perpendicular) in full analogy to the switching of low molecular liquid crystals in an electric field. Dielectric measurements show that such a switching is mainly …

Synthesis and helical supramolecular organization of discotic liquid crystalline dibenzo[hi,st]ovalene

2019

Dibenzo[hi,st]ovalene (DBOV) has emerged as a new polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) with intriguing optical properties with strong red emission. Nevertheless, DBOV derivatives thus far synthesized either had mesityl groups that hinder the pi-pi stacking of the aromatic cores or showed low solubility, and the self-assembly of DBOVs has not been investigated. In this work, two 3,4,5-tris(dodecyloxy)phenyl (TDOP) groups are introduced at the meso-positions of DBOV in order to enhance its solubility without compromising the intermolecular interactions. The obtained DBOV-TDOP forms at elevated temperatures a discotic liquid crystalline phase. Due to pi-pi-stacking interactions as well as loc…
