Capsaicin desensitization in vivo is inhibited by ruthenium red.

The effect of systemic administration of Ruthenium Red on the excitatory and desensitizing effect of capsaicin was investigated in rats. Ruthenium Red was injected s.c. 30 min before capsaicin was administered. The excitatory effect of capsaicin on corneal, perivascular and visceral afferents was not influenced by treatment with Ruthenium Red. However, determination of the neuropeptide content and evoked neuropeptide release in peripheral organs and dorsal spinal cord 48 h after treatment showed that Ruthenium Red attenuated the 'desensitizing' effect of capsaicin at peripheral, but not at central, endings of primary afferents. EPR DOSIMETRY IN A MIXED NEUTRON AND GAMMA RADIATION FIELD

Suitability of Electron Paramagnetic Resonance (EPR) spectroscopy for criticality dosimetry was evaluated for tooth enamel, mannose and alanine pellets during the 'international intercomparison of criticality dosimetry techniques' at the SILENE reactor held in Valduc in June 2002, France. These three materials were irradiated in neutron and gamma-ray fields of various relative intensities and spectral distributions in order to evaluate their neutron sensitivity. The neutron response was found to be around 10% for tooth enamel, 45% for mannose and between 40 and 90% for alanine pellets according their type. Nitrous oxide emissions in a membrane bioreactor treating saline wastewater contaminated by hydrocarbons

The joint effect of wastewater salinity and hydrocarbons on nitrous oxide emission was investigated. The membrane bioreactor pilot plant was operated with two phases: i. biomass acclimation by increasing salinity from 10 gNaCl L−1 to 20 gNaCl L−1 (Phase I); ii. hydrocarbons dosing at 20 mg L−1 with a constant salt concentration of 20 gNaCl L−1 (Phase II). The Phase I revealed a relationship between nitrous oxide emissions and salinity. During the end of the Phase I, the activity of nitrifiers started to recover, indicating a partial acclimatization. <title>Micro-Raman scattering and infrared spectra of hemoglobin</title>

Confocal micro-Raman and FT-IR spectroscopies have been used for detection of radiation influence of hemoglobin of patients examined by radio-isotopes diagnosis (Tc99m). After irradiation we observed some little changes of the Raman scattering bands which connected with out of plane porphyrine bending vibrations, also we observed additional band due to methemoglobin. Radiation of blood lead to the transition from hemoglobin (Fe2+) to methemoglobin (Fe3+) with a delocalization of iron from porphyrine plane. Synthesis of 2,4,6-trisubstituted tetrahydropyrans via 6-exo selenoetherification of unsaturated alcohols

Stereoselectivity, regioselectivity and yields in the 6-exo selenoetherification of four unsaturated diols were found to depend on the stereochemistry of the diols and on the presence of an oxygen atom close to the intermediate seleniranium ring. Silica gel was useful in order to obtain good yields. Reactions performed both under kinetic and thermodynamic control led to the same products. Stereoselectivity, regioselectivity and yields in the 6-exo selenoetherification of four unsaturated diols were found to depend on several factors such as the stereochemistry of the diols, the nature of the R group, the nature of the counter anion of the PhSe+ species and the presence of silica gel.

Abstract Inductively coupled plasma atomic emission spectrometry has been applied for the estimation of major constituents in molybdenite concentrate solutions produced by hydrometallurgical alkaline digestion. Copper, iron, molybdenum and silicon were considered as major constituents to be determined. Multiple linear regression was utilized for the control of matrix effects. Using simple acid-based standards, all the elements investigated could be determined with satisfactory results using an appropriate method of calculation.

Birefringent porous silicon membranes for optical sensing

In this work anisotropic porous silicon is investigated as a material for optical sensing. Birefringence and sensitivity of the anisotropic porous silicon membranes are thoroughly studied in the framework of Bruggeman model which is extended to incorporate the influence of environment effects, such as silicon oxidation. The membranes were also characterized optically demonstrating sensitivity as high as 1245 nm/RIU at 1500 nm. This experimental value only agrees with the theory when it takes into consideration the effect of silicon oxidation. The measurement of impurities in silicon for solar cell production

The power conversion efficiency of solar cells is largely dependent on impurity levels in silicon. In the current investigations two sample preparation methods of silicon had been used before analysis - acid dissolution at atmospheric pressure and pressured microwave assisted technique. Quantification of impurities in solar silicon was done by inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry and electrothermal atomic spectrometry.
