Rainwater-induced leaching of selenium, arsenic and vanadium from Etnean volcanic soils
2009
Active volcanoes emit considerable amounts of contaminants such as As, Se and V. Mount Etna is the biggest volcano of Europe and an excellent geochemical site to study water-soil processes. Due to its volcanic activity, the rainwater has a strong compositional gradient, both in time and space. At present, the behaviour of trace elements in the soils around Mt Etna is poorly understood. To determine the influence of the rainwater pH on the potential mobilization of geogenic pollutants, batch experiments have been performed with synthetic rainwater for 25 soils collected along the flanks of the volcano. Our results show that: i) The maximum concentrations in the leaching solutions are higher …

Ionic self assembly in the design of fluorinated ionic liquid crystals (ILCs)
2011
Ionic liquid crystals are a class of compounds containing anions and cations, that combine the properties of liquid crystals and ionic liquids[1]. In the conventional design of ionic liquid crystalline compounds, an ionic core is connected with mesogenic groups via chemical covalent bonding . Alternatively, in ionic compounds, strong electrostatic interactions between cation and anion can be used to build up liquid crystalline order at supramolecular level. This general approach, called ionic self-assembly (ISA), allows one to create ionic phases and mesophases with highly organized supramolecular order [2]. In this context, a new series of fluorinated ionic liquids (ILs) and ionic liquid c…
Sequestration of Pd2+ by polyamino-polycarboxylic ligands
2011
The increase of the worldwide demand of “Platinum group elements” (PGE) for application in several fields such as industry, medicine, jewellery and, especially, in catalyst converter production, caused a noticeable increasing of PGE concentration in the environment. Though palladium, among the anthropogenic PGE, is not the most abundant one, it is the most hazardous since it undergoes easily and quickly oxidation to palladium(II) when in contact with soils, with a consequent increase of its mobility in the environment. The presence of complexing agents, which form soluble complex species with palladium(II), favours the mobility of the ion with an increase of its availability to plants, anim…

Development of different nanosystems for drugs and siRNA delivery
Cancer is one of the leading causes of death in the world. Over the past several decades, the development of engineered nanosystems for targeted drug delivery have received great attention thanks to their possibility to overcome the limitations of classical cancer chemotherapy including poor solubility, targeting incapability, nonspecific action and, consequently, systemic toxicity. In this contest, four different models of nanocarriers have been analysed and compared for their capacity to target tumour tissue and to release the therapeutic agent in a controlled way: INU-EDA-P,C-DOXO; PHEA-EDA-P,C-DOXO; PVP-siRNA and RGO-siRNA. Inulin and PHEA were conjugated to the antineoplastic drug doxo…

Amorphous silicon nanotubes
2017
In the following, the attention will be focused on the silicon nanotube (SiNTs) that is a highly desired form of silicon for its fundamental role in the miniaturization trend of the electronic devices. After a description of the properties and applications of SiNTs and their fabrication methods, the attention will be focused on chemical vapour deposition (CVD) template synthesis that is the most usual synthetic method for this material. Then, galvanic template synthesis will be described as a general method for the fabrication of different metals and oxides nanostructures, therefore the use of this technique for synthesizing SiNTs will be detailed. Characterization methods will be also desc…
Temperature-responsive hybrid nanomaterials based on modified halloysite nanotubes uploaded with silver nanoparticles
2022
New temperature-responsive hybrid nanomaterials based on modified halloysite nanotubes (HNTs) containing grafted polymer brushes with silver nanoparticles have been successfully fabricated. We used a three steps process including synthesis of the initiating coatings onto HNTs surface, fabrication of the POEGMA – poly(oligo(ethylene glycol)ethyl ether methacrylate) grafted brushes and synthesis of the silver nanoparticles (AgNPs). The synthesis and properties of hybrid nanomaterials were studied by FT-IR, TGA and DLS methods. It is shown that the introduction of AgNPs, formed from 0.005 M AgNO3 solution leads to a significant reduction of low critical solution temperature (LCST) of the polym…
