The Peripheri-City of the Inner Areas: Local Development in the Sicani Territory
2018
The inner peripheries are now subject to territorial and social metamorphosis in the sense that they are returning to be attractive places for younger generations through the rediscovery of the potential that they offer in terms of esources and propensity to change. Characterised by an ev-ergrowing number of bottom-up innovation experiences of both traditional crafts and agricultural production, and with abandoned sites in social and cultural places having been recovered, thus allowing the rediscovery the sense of sharing and conviviality typical of these places in the past to be rediscovered, these sites presently need to be discussed, described, and thought of in a new way. The experience…
Discharge management in fresh and brackish water RAS: Combined phosphorus removal by organic flocculants and nitrogen removal in woodchip reactors
2020
The current study combined P and N removal using organic flocculant chemicals and woodchip bioreactors in both freshwater and brackish water (7 ppm) recirculating aquaculture systems (RAS). The use of carbon (C) containing flocculant chemicals in the process was hypothesized to further stimulate C-demanding N removal (denitrification) in bioreactors. The trial of combined P and N removal consisted of four treatments: freshwater and brackish water RAS with and without the addition of supernatant from flocculation process to the woodchip reactor. Duplicate woodchip reactors were used per treatment and the trial was run for six weeks. 56 % and 49 % of P was removed from fresh and brackish slud…
Multi-Chip RFID Antenna Integrating Shape-Memory Alloys for Detection of Thermal Thresholds
2011
Low-cost wireless measurement of objects' temperature is one of the greatest expectation of radiofrequency identification technology for the so many applications in cold supply-chain control and safety assessment in general. In this context, the paper proposes a dual-chip UHF tag embedding shape memory alloys (SMA) able to transform the variation of the tagged item's temperature into a permanent change of antenna radiation features. This event-driven antenna is hence able to selectively activate the embedded microchips according to the temperature above or below a given threshold. A general design methodology for the resulting two-ports tag antenna is here introduced and then applied to pro…
The Smart Land Paradigm in the Sicani Territorial Archipelago
2017
With the aim to identify the specific identities of the Sicani territory, to interpret them in a perspective of innovative development and to define strategies capable of intercepting programming in progress, it has been deepened the “territorial archipelago” theoretical framework , recognizing it into the Sicani territory and trying to use it as the base of a possible development of a Smart Land, as a “non-gravitational” paradigm able to recognize and to direct the new relations of the rur-urban local systems.
Moving around the Philippines
2012
International audience; Visitors to Manila are quickly aware of the traffic jams and impediments to efficient transport within the capital region of the Philippines. Hours seem to be lost in traffic, and public transportation is very crowded. What are the reasons for these difficulties? Poor planning, lack of enforcement of the rules of circulation, an excessive rate of motorization, an insufficient development of quality public transit? What should be the role of "informal" transport (trisikel, pedicab, jeepneys) in a system of mobilities that should remain fair to all, rich and poor alike? The same set of questions arises for the mobility across the country. As an archipelago, and a count…
Vinificazione in bianco in presenza di chips di quercia di origine e livello di tostatura diversi
2011
Some musts from Grillo grapes, a cultivar autochthonous of western Sicily, fermented with medium toasted American oak chips or with non toasted French oak chips (Classic Line – HTS enology) have been vinified. the wines were significantly different as regards the contents in volatile and non volatile compounds extracted from American and French oak chips. a slight increase in alcoholic fermentation rate and in some cases a higher content of ethyl esters and medium chain fatty acids, were observed in musts charged with chips, independently of their origin. In wines obtained from musts charged with french medium toasted oak chips, the content in furans was higher (5-methylfurfural, trans-meth…
