Neighbor-list-free molecular dynamics on sunway TaihuLight supercomputer
2020
Molecular dynamics (MD) simulations are playing an increasingly important role in many research areas. Pair-wise potentials are widely used in MD simulations of bio-molecules, polymers, and nano-scale materials. Due to a low compute-to-memory-access ratio, their calculation is often bounded by memory transfer speeds. Sunway TaihuLight is one of the fastest supercomputers featuring a custom SW26010 many-core processor. Since the SW26010 has some critical limitations regarding main memory bandwidth and scratchpad memory size, it is considered as a good platform to investigate the optimization of pair-wise potentials especially in terms of data reusage. MD algorithms often use a neighbor-list …
Microphysical and radiative characterization of a subvisible midlevel Arctic ice cluod by airborne observations - a case study
2009
During the Arctic Study of Tropospheric Aerosol, Clouds and Radiation (ASTAR) campaign, which was conducted in March and April 2007, an optically thin ice cloud was observed south of Svalbard at around 3 km altitude. The microphysical and radiative properties of this particular subvisible midlevel cloud were investigated with complementary remote sensing and in situ instruments. Collocated airborne lidar remote sensing and spectral solar radiation measurements were performed at a flight altitude of 2300 m below the cloud base. Under almost stationary atmospheric conditions, the same subvisible midlevel cloud was probed with various in situ sensors roughly 30 min later.

…
Microphysical and optical properties of Arctic mixed-phase clouds. The 9 April 2007 case study.
2009
Abstract. Airborne measurements in Arctic boundary-layer stratocumulus were carried out near Spitsbergen on 9 April 2007 during the Arctic Study of Tropospheric Aerosol, Clouds and Radiation (ASTAR) campaign. A unique set of co-located observations is used to describe the cloud properties, including detailed in situ cloud microphysical and radiation measurements along with airborne and co-located spaceborne remote sensing data (Lidar on Cloud-Aerosol Lidar and Infrared Pathfinder Satellite Observations [CALIPSO] and radar on CloudSat satellites). The CALIPSO profiles evidence a cloud top temperature which varies between −24°C and −21°C. The in situ cloud observations reveal that the attenua…
Lidar characterization of the Arctic atmosphere during ASTAR 2007: Four cases studies of boundary layer, mixed-phase and multi-layer clouds
2010
During the Arctic Study of Tropospheric Aerosol, Clouds and Radiation (ASTAR), which was conducted in Svalbard in March and April 2007, tropospheric Arctic clouds were observed with two ground-based backscatter lidar systems (micro pulse lidar and Raman lidar) and with an airborne elastic lidar. In the time period of the ASTAR 2007 campaign, an increase in low-level cloud cover (cloud tops below 2.5 km) from 51% to 65% was observed above Ny-Ålesund. Four different case studies of lidar cloud observations are analyzed: With the ground-based Raman lidar, a layer of spherical particles was observed at an altitude of 2 km after the dissolution of a cloud. The layer probably consisted of small h…
ENERGY RECOVERY FROM REGASIFICATION OF LNG
2012
The international forecasts on energy consumption in the next future show an increasing trend due also to growing markets, and among this the leading emerging economies connected to BRICS countries (Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa). We need more and more energy. On the other side the environmental problem is arising and the climate change is a more and more pressing emergency. The latest environmental disasters, as the oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico in 2010 and the earthquake with the following tsunami in Japan in 2011, struck the public opinion and so, as in many European countries, the nuclear program is under a deep revision or even stopped. So it is necessary to utilize a…
Some aspects of Chiral Perturbation Theory and Neutrino Physics
2017
Shopping with virtual hands
2020
Retailers can use virtual reality as a new touchpoint for their customers: within an existent channel or as a new sales channel. Thus, it is crucial to understand the differences and similarities between the physical and the virtual shopping environment. Shopping simulations make it possible to test, observe, and collect data in a controlled, low-cost, and fast way compared to field experiments. However, past studies might have provided biased results due to the characteristics of the sample used. This study analyzes how consumers behave in two virtual shopping tasks. The exploratory, experimental research uses an immersive VR shopping environment and a sample of participants balanced acros…
How Are Negative Customer Experiences Formed? A Qualitative Study of Customers’ Online Shopping Journeys
2019
This study investigates how negative customer experiences are formed during customers’ online shopping journeys. A qualitative, in-depth dataset collected from 34 participants was employed to identify negatively perceived touchpoints that contribute to the customer experience in a negative way. The findings reveal that negative touchpoints are experienced during customers’ entire journeys, particularly after a purchase is completed. We identified 152 negative touchpoints from the data, of which 53 were experienced during search and consideration, 35 when finalizing a purchase, 33 during delivery, and 31 during after-sales interactions with the company. Within these four main categories, 20 …
CHP (combined heat and power) retrofit for a large MED-TVC (multiple effect distillation along with thermal vapour compression) desalination plant: H…
2016
Abstract Integrated power plants in “dual purpose” configuration may represent a viable option for energy cost abatement of desalted water produced by MED-TVC (Multiple Effect Distillation along with Thermal Vapour Compression). In this paper an existing large MED-TVC plant with a 36,000 m 3 /day capacity is studied: a plant retrofit is designed, based on a steam power plant with condensation and steam extraction used to drive the steam ejector. As the plant operates in CHP (Combined Heat and Power) mode, the possibility to assess the integrated “CHP + MED-TVC” as high efficiency cogeneration according to Directive 2004/8/EC is discussed. Based on a model developed in Engineering Equation S…
Concurrent optimization of size and switch-on priority of a multisource energy system for a commercial building application
2015
Abstract In recent years, the governments of most nations have pledged to (i) limit carbon dioxide emissions, (ii) reduce primary energy consumption by increasing production, distribution and end-use efficiency and (iii) increase the utilization of renewable energy sources. In general, these goals are pursued separately by law, by subsidizing renewable energy technologies, reducing the demand or using high efficiency technologies. In this context, multi-source systems for the fulfillment of energy demands are highly advantageous because they are based on different technologies which use renewable, partially renewable and fossil energy sources. However, the main issues of multi-source system…
