Acetylcysteine therapy for chronic hepatitis C: are its effects synergistic with interferon alpha? A pilot study.
2008
This trial reports the 6-month results of a pilot study using lymphoblastoid interferon alpha (IFNalpha) and acetylcysteine (N-acetylcysteine) separately and in combination in patients with chronic hepatitis C, genotype 1b, who were nonresponders to previous treatment with recombinant IFNalpha alone.21 patients were randomly divided into three groups of seven each. Group A was treated with lymphoblastoid IFNalpha 6MU three times a week for 6 months; group B received the same schedule of lymphoblastoid IFNalpha as group A plus acetylcysteine 1200 mg/day per os in two administrations, and group C received only acetylcysteine 1200 mg/day per os in two administrations.Mean serum alanine aminotr…
Rapporto costo-efficacia della terapia peginterferone α-2a + ribavirina in confronto a interferone α-2b + ribavirina in pazienti affetti da epatite c…
2004
Introduction In adults with previously untreated chronic hepatitis C (CHC), the combination of peginterferon α-2a plus ribavirin produces a higher rate of sustained virological response (SVR) than interferon α-2b plus ribavirin, but it is still unproven whether this increase is cost-effective. The objective of this study was to determine if the gain in SVR with peginterferon α-2a plus ribavirin is worth the incremental cost.
Therapy with lamivudine and steroids in a patient with acute hepatitis B and rapidly progressive glomerulonephritis.
2006
To the Editor: Tang et al.1 recently reported that lamivudine (LAM) improves renal outcome in patients with chronic hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection and membranous nephropathy. We would like to add our experience on acute hepatitis B and rapidly progressive glomerulonephritis.
Alcohol and Cannabis Consumption Does Not Diminish Cure Rates in a Real-World Cohort of Chronic Hepatitis C Virus Infected Patients on Opioid Substit…
2019
Background: The importance of alcohol and cannabis consumption for the effectiveness of treatment of chronic hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection with direct acting antivirals (DAAs) in people on opioid substitution therapy (OST) has not been investigated in detail. Methods: We investigated sustained virological response (SVR) rates and proportion of lost to follow-up (LTFU) between OST (n = 739) and non-OST patients (n = 7008) in the German Hepatitis C-Registry (Deutsches Hepatitis C-Register, DHC-R), which is a national multicenter prospective non-interventional real-world registry. Non-OST patients comprised patients with former/current drug use (non-OST/DU; n = 1500) and patients never con…

Role of LI-RADS Indeterminate Observations in the Risk of Hepatocellular Carcinoma after HCV Eradication with Direct-Acting Antivirals.
2022
Purpose: To assess whether HCC (LR-5) occurrence may be associated with the presence of Liver Imaging Reporting and Data System (LI-RADS) indeterminate observations in patients with hepatitis C virus infection treated with direct acting antiviral (DAA) therapy. Materials and methods: This retrospective study included patients with HCV-related cirrhosis who achieved sustained virologic response (SVR) after DAA therapy between 2015 and 2019 and submitted to CT/MRI follow-ups with a minimum interval time of six months before and after DAA. Two blinded readers reviewed CT/MRI to categorize observations according to LI-RADS version 2018. Differences in rate of LI-RADS 5 observations (i.e., LR-5)…
Performance of the PRO-C3 collagen neo-epitope biomarker in non-alcoholic fatty liver disease.
2019
Background & Aim There is an unmet need for non-invasive biomarkers in non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) that can diagnose advanced disease and identify patients suitable for clinical trials. The PRO-C3 collagen neo-epitope is a putative direct marker of fibrogenesis. We assessed the performance of PRO-C3 in a large, well-characterised international NAFLD cohort and report the development and validation of 2 novel panels for the diagnosis of advanced fibrosis (F≥3) in NAFLD, including a simplified clinical score which eliminates the need for online calculators. Methods Plasma PRO-C3 levels were determined in a prospectively recruited international cohort of 449 patients with biopsy …
Drug Treatment for Chronic Hepatitis C Infection and Cancer Risk
2017
BACKGROUND In patients with chronic hepatitis C infection, a sustained virologic response (SVR) to interferon-based therapy markedly decreases the incidence of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) over the long term. This is also true for patients who have hepatic cirrhosis, as well as for those with HCC-with or without cirrhosis-who have undergone resection or ablation with curative intent. Recent publications, however, have reported a higher incidence of HCC among patients in both of these subgroups who were treated with direct antiviral agents (DAA) rather than interferon-based therapy. METHODS A selective search for pertinent literature was carried out in the PubMed database with the search t…
Interferon for non-A, non-B chronic hepatitis
1991
Abstract We reviewed randomised clinical trials evaluating the effect of lymphoblastoid or recombinant α-interferon in non-A, non-B chronic hepatitis. The outcomes assessed were the rates of serum alanine aminotransferase normalization and relapse during and after stopping interferon. Data were pooled by meta-analysis and a 50% overall rate difference, favouring treated patients, was found. Results showed homogeneity in direction of treatment effect both after short-term (2–6 months, ≥ 2 mega-units thrice weekly) and long-term (9–18 months, variable dose) interferon course. Moreover, results did not change when type of publication (abstracts vs. full reports) and treatment duration or sched…
