Moventi e modelli dell’azione benefica nella riflessione antica

2021

Classical thinkers described sometimes the donor’s move employing some unexpected analogies: Aristotle explains the “benefactor’s love” comparing it to the artist’s love for his artwork, or to the mother’s devotion to her sons. Cicero talks about benivolentia as a permanent and constant affect, very distant from amor adulescentulorum. Seneca, in ben. 1.14, chooses to compare donor’s beneficia amabilia to the behavior of meretrix. The aim of this paper is to recognize the tight bind of love and interest underlying these analogies, and to explain how it could be, after all, a pattern useful for re-thinking the nature of contemporary philanthropy.

2002

Kreikkalainen Aratos Soloslainen kirjoitti tähtitaivasta kuvailevan heksametri-mittaisen Fainomena-opetusrunoelman n. 270 eKr.

Antinociceptive Effects of Turkish Endemic Eryngium kotschyi Boiss. Roots by Bioactivity Guided Fractionation

2010

Eryngium species (Apiaceae) are well known plants in ethnobotanical culture throughout world and also in Turkey. They are used as antitussive, diuretic as well as for analgesic and antiinflammatory purposes in traditional medicine. This study aimed to evaluate the antinociceptive activity of endemic Eryngium kotschyi Boiss. root extracts by bioguided fractionation. The antinociceptive activity of the extracts/fractions/compound was studied in mice using acetic acid induced writhing test and and hot plate test. The methanolic extract was sequentially partitioned with hexane, dichloromethane and water saturated n-butanol. Among the fractions, the n-BuOH fraction showed the most significant re…

Barking at the Threshold

2019

Over the past few years, students of ancient Mediterranean societies have shown consistent interest in the cultural construction of dogs as reflected in texts, artefacts, and other media. However, whereas the cultural and literary implications of the Greek representation of dogs have been the subject of thorough investigations, Roman dogs have remained at the margins of the scholarly debate. By adopting an interdisciplinary methodology that combines cognitive theory, rhetorical analysis, and socio-anthropological research, the present paper discusses some affordances of dogs (in the terms of James Gibson’s 'ecological approach to visual perception') that are given special significance withi…

Bilateral activations in operculo‐insular area show temporal dissociation after peripheral electrical stimulation in healthy adults

2018

Interhemispheric transfer is necessary for sensory integration and coordination of body sides. We studied how somatosensory input from one body side may reach both body sides. First, we investigated with 17 healthy adults in which uni‐ and bilateral brain areas were involved in consecutive stages of automatic sensory processing of non‐nociceptive peripheral stimulation. Somatosensory evoked fields (SEFs) to electrical stimulation were recorded with 306‐channel magnetoencephalography in two conditions. First, SEFs were registered following sensory radial nerve (RN) stimulation to dorsal surface of the right hand and second, following median nerve (MN) stimulation at the right wrist. Cortical…
