Cicero's Pro Ligario is frequently mentioned in Quintilian’s Institutio Oratoria. The author is very aware of the importance of the text for the social and historical context in which it was pronounced and for the ambiguous presence of Caesar. Among these quotations stands out in the treaty the evocation of the sword of Tubero (Cic. Lig. 9) in five different contexts that confirm the Quintilian’s remarkable interest for this text.

The paper deals with the character of Ulysses within the frame of the Tusculanae disputationes with a particular focus on the sequence 2, 48-50. The comparison between the hero and other mythological figures (e.g. Philoctetes) allows us to observe the role of Ulysses as a model for decorum, analysing at the same time the way in which Cicero reinterprets actions and behavior of the character starting from the fragments of Pacuvius’ Niptra.

Il modulo rappresentativo della bestializzazione, la descrizione di degradazioni animali di soggetti umani, funge da chiave di accesso al problema della violenza e del suo vissuto culturale nella letteratura latina. Attraverso l'esame di una serie di testi che spaziano da Sallustio e Cicerone a Seneca e Giovenale, viene messo in luce il progressivo 'slittamento' di alcune categorie simboliche ricorrenti nel mondo romano: in particolare, si rileva come dall'idea di una violenza ai danni della comunità che bestializza, rende gli uomini uguali agli animali, si transiti progressivamente al concetto di una bestialità umana 'meno che animale', all'immagine di un uomo peggiore delle fiere.

This paper is focused on the presence of some metaphorical images, in Cicero’s and Tacitus’s rhetorical texts, taken mainly from the architectural language. Such presence, usually into a wider allegorical imagery that includes images related to the home and to the temple, becomes constant in the Roman rhetorical treatises. On the other hand, when these images emerge frequently in the Aper’s speech in the dialogus de oratoribus, we may notice that they show a radical change in the eloquence, in its function and in its social perception.
