Mast cells as protectors of health.

Mast cells (MCs), which are well known for their effector functions in T(H)2-skewed allergic and also autoimmune inflammation, have become increasingly acknowledged for their role in protection of health. It is now clear that they are also key modulators of immune responses at interface organs, such as the skin or gut. MCs can prime tissues for adequate inflammatory responses and cooperate with dendritic cells in T-cell activation. They also regulate harmful immune responses in trauma and help to successfully orchestrate pregnancy. Abstract Background In contrast to earlier assumptions, there is now mounting evidence for the role of tundra soils as important sources of the greenhouse gas nitrous oxide (N2O). However, the microorganisms involved in the cycling of N2O in this system remain largely uncharacterized. Ultrafast solvent-assisted level crossing in 1-Naphthol

The nonadiabatic inversion dynamics of the energetic order of the electronic excited states of the photoacid 1-naphthol have been revealed by ultrafast spectroscopy on a femtosecond timescale (see picture; IC=internal conversion). The energetic order of the excited states La and Lb of 1-naphthol is reversed in 60 fs in polar dimethyl sulfoxide solvent.
