Physiological advantages of dwarfing in surviving extinctions in high-CO2 oceans
2015
Excessive CO 2 in the present-day ocean-atmosphere system is causing ocean acidification, and is likely to cause a severe biodiversity decline in the future, mirroring effects in many past mass extinctions. Fossil records demonstrate that organisms surviving such events were often smaller than those before, a phenomenon called the Lilliput effect. Here, we show that two gastropod species adapted to acidified seawater at shallow-water CO 2 seeps were smaller than those found in normal pH conditions and had higher mass-specific energy consumption but significantly lower whole-animal metabolic energy demand. These physiological changes allowed the animals to maintain calcification and to parti…
Macroscopic and Molecular Insights from CO Adsorption on NaY Zeolite: A Combined FTIR and Manometric Study
2012
International audience; This survey combines both quantitative and IR molecular descriptions and aims to provide new insights for the description of CO adsorption on NaY zeolite at 77 K. Quantitative measurements of the number of CO molecules trapped in the microporous super cage are compared to the corresponding IR spectra of CO as adsorbed species. We demonstrate that polycarbonyls formed during the completion of the accessible S-II Na+ coordinative vacancies result in the formation of mono-, di- and tricarbonyls but not consecutively. Quantitative analysis and measurements of the CO molecules that are adsorbed prove that polycarbonyls coexist with different proportions over the adsorptio…
Surface characterization of metal ions loaded TiO2 photocatalysts: structure-activity relationship
2004
Transition metal loaded TiO2 powders were characterised and tested for the photodegradation of some organic acids. Both Lewis and Brønsted surface acid sites were present in the samples containing large amounts of Mo, V and W. The Brønsted sites are associated to the presence of the transition metals as they do not exist in the unloaded support, and in particular to the presence of these metals in high oxidation states. The trend of the pzc values of the various powders matches rather well both with the surface acidity of the samples experimentally determined by NH3 adsorption and with a scale of acidity/basicity for bulk binary oxides. XPS investigation indicates that only the presence of …

Slight differences in community structure and biodiversity of fish associated to a Cymodocea nodosa meadow in a shallow CO2 vent
2018
Naturally acidified environments are used to test ecological hypotheses about the effects of ocean acidification on complex communities. Here, we used a shallow Mediterranean CO2 vent to study the coastal fish assemblages associated to Cymodocea nodosa seagrass meadows, long-term exposed to high pCO2 / low pH conditions. In particular, by using underwater visual census method, we assessed the structure and the biodiversity of fish assemblages living in a low pH site and in two control sites, in two periods of the year featured by dissimilar seagrass structure. The aim of this study was to test the effect of different pH on fish assemblages mediated by the habitat-forming structural species …
Tucidide e gli Elimi: quali barbari?
2012

Comparison of 24-h control of gastric acidity by three different dosages of pantoprazole in patients with duodenal ulcer
1998
Background It is now clear that the extent to which gastric acid secretion must be suppressed varies with the clinical condition being treated. Aim To assess the 24-h control of gastric acidity and the individual response variability of three different doses of pantoprazole. Methods Sixty-four duodenal ulcer patients were recruited for this prospective, randomized, multicentre, double-blind, parallel-group study. They were subdivided into three well-matched groups treated with 20 mg o.m., 40 mg o.m. and 40 mg b.d. of pantoprazole, respectively. Endoscopy and intragastric pH monitoring were performed in each patient before and after 14 days of treatment. Results Fifty-five patients were elig…
