Positive Iron Balance in Chronic Kidney Disease: How Much is Too Much and How to Tell?

2017

Background: Regulation of body iron occurs at cellular, tissue, and systemic levels. In healthy individuals, iron absorption and losses are minimal, creating a virtually closed system. In the setting of chronic kidney disease and hemodialysis (HD), increased iron losses, reduced iron absorption, and limited iron availability lead to iron deficiency. Intravenous (IV) iron therapy is frequently prescribed to replace lost iron, but determining an individual’s iron balance and stores can be challenging and imprecise, contributing to uncertainty about the long-term safety of IV iron therapy. Summary: Patients on HD recei…

2020

John’s usurpation: the pursuit of legitimacy, the victory over the tyrannus · In November 423, three months after the death of Honorius, the usurper John was proclaimed em- peror in Rome. He had been primicerius notariorum at the court of Ravenna and his elevation was made by the members of the aulé, as Procopius reports. Neverthless, the sources are not agreed: Malala says that John was a synkletikoi and ruled supported by the synkletikoi The literary and numismatic evidence shows that John aspired to recognition as lawful sovereign in the two parts of the Empire. Theodosius restored order and legitimacy to the West with the military intervention and the proclamation of Valentinian III as…

El crimen de genocidio

2013

This contribution focuses on the study of the crime of genocide and on its application by international tribunals, mainly the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda, the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia and the International Court of Justice. Predicción de la reincidencia con delincuentes juveniles: adaptación del IGI-J

2017

[EN] The aim of this study is to determine the usefulness of the Management and Intervention Inventory for Young (IGI-J) in predicting the past recidivism in young offenders, and the implementation of appropriate intervention programs for that population. A retrospective study with a sample of 258 juvenile offenders who were serving a penal measure was performed. The instrument that evaluated the prediction of recidivism is the Youth Level of Service/Case Management Inventory (Hoge and Andrews, 2002). Its adaptation to spanish is the IGI-J (Garrido, Lopez and Silva, 2004). The results indicate that the IGI-J correctly identified 66.7% of offenders and 68.8% of non-recidivists, with an alpha…

Structural differences of prebiotic oligosaccharides influence their capability to enhance iron absorption in deficient rats

2014

This study evaluates the influence of novel galacto-oligosaccharides derived from lactulose (GOS-Lu), kojibiose or 4′-galactosyl-kojibiose in hematological parameters of Fe homeostasis using Fe-deficient animals. Liver TfR-2, IL-6, NFκB and PPAR-γ expression (mRNA) were also determined by RT-qPCR analyses, and active hepcidin peptide production and short chain fatty acids by LC coupled to MS/MS or UV detection. Feeding animals with GOS-Lu or kojibiose together with FeCl3 increased hemoglobin (Hb) production (by 17%) and mean Hb concentration into erythrocytes relative to animals administered with FeCl3 alone (14.1% and 19.7%, respectively). Animals administered with prebiotics showed decrea…

Phenoloxidases of different sizes are modulated by LPS inoculation into ciona intestinalis tunic and pharynx

2015

In the present study, to further characterize the pro-phenoloxidase (proPO) and active phenoloxidase (PO) involved in the Ciona intestinalis inflammatory response, tunic and pharynx homogenate supernatants were separated on high pressure liquid chromatography and fractions were assayed for the PO activity before and after LPS inoculation, as well as before and after trypsin treatment which activates proPO. The LPS inoculation per se did not significantly change the basal PO activity of the tunic homogenate supernatant (THS) and pharynx homogenate supernatant (PHS) restricted in two confluent peaks, whereas a significant enhancement was observable after the trypsin treatment. This trypsin ef…

The influence of the wooden equipment employed for cheese manufacture on the characteristics of a traditional stretched cheese during ripening

2015

Abstract The influence of the wooden equipment used for the traditional cheese manufacturing from raw milk was evaluated on the variations of chemico-physical characteristics and microbial populations during the ripening of Caciocavallo Palermitano cheese. Milk from two farms (A, extensive; B, intensive) was processed in traditional and standard conditions. Chemical and physical traits of cheeses were affected by the farming system and the cheese making technology, and changed during ripening. Content in NaCl and N soluble was lower, and paste consistency higher in cheese from the extensive farm and traditional technology, whereas ripening increased the N soluble and the paste yellow and co…
