CARATTERIZZAZIONE E TRATTAMENTO DELLA CARTA DI UN VOLUME A STAMPA DEL 1591

2014

SCD5-induced oleic acid production reduces melanoma malignancy by intracellular retention of SPARC and cathepsin B

2014

A proper balance between saturated and unsaturated fatty acids (FAs) is required for maintaining cell homeostasis. The increased demand of FAs to assemble the plasma membranes of continuously dividing cancer cells might unbalance this ratio and critically affect tumour outgrowth. We unveiled the role of the stearoyl-CoA desaturase SCD5 in converting saturated FAs into mono-unsaturated FAs during melanoma progression. SCD5 is down-regulated in advanced melanoma and its restored expression significantly reduced melanoma malignancy, both in vitro and in vivo, through a mechanism governing the secretion of extracellular matrix proteins, such as secreted protein acidic and rich in cysteine (SPAR…

Contribution of microscopy to the study of proliferating blood cells in Ciona intestinalis immune response

2010

Following an inflammatory stimulus such as the injection of erythrocytes into the tunic of Ciona intestinalis, hemocytes respond to events occurring in the tunic within a short time, and infiltrate the inflamed tissue being massively involved in the acute inflammatory response and capsule formation. The proliferative response of circulating hemocytes and pharynx assume particular interest as it is significantly enhanced during these defence reactions. Microscopy clearly may contribute to extend our understanding of the phenomenon showing interesting mitotic figures and hematogenic nodules with proliferative characteristics.

New and little known Cerambycidae (Coleoptera Chrysomeloidea) from Pantelleria Island (Sicily Channel, Italy)

2019

p-Nitrophenolate: A Probe for Determining Acid Strength in Ionic Liquids

2009

In order to obtain an acidity scale in room-temperature ionic liquid solutions, the protonation equilibrium of sodium p-nitrophenolate in [bm(2)im][NTf(2)] and in [bmpyrr][NTf(2)], at 298 K, has been studied by means of spectrophotometric titration. Carboxylic acids differing in both structure and in water solution strength have been used. Data collected indicate that in the analyzed ionic liquid solutions carboxylic acids are less dissociated than in water solution. Furthermore, by virtue of a mutual interaction, the studied equilibrium seems to be affected by both the nature of the ionic liquids and the carboxylic acids.

HPLC in the characterisation of conformational species of linear gramicidins

1997

Abstract High-performance size-exclusion chromatography (HPSEC) has proved to be a highly simplified and rapid procedure to investigate the conformational behaviour of gramicidin A inserted in different model membrane systems (lipid dispersions, liposomes, micelles) based on the separation of double-stranded dimers and monomers present in the lipid assemblies. The HPSEC approach has been extended to the characterisation of acylated analogs of gramicidin (palmitoyl- and oleoyl-derivatives) and a series of peptide analogs where tryptophan residues were chemically modified or replaced by less polar residues (phenylalanine or naphtylalanine) lacking H-bonding ability. The Chromatographic result…

New high-performance liquid chromatography-based methodology for monitoring the conformational transitions of self-associating hydrophobic peptides, …

1988

A new high-performance size-exclusion chromatographic strategy is reported for the analysis of the hydrophobic self-associating peptide gramicidin A, incorporated into artificial phospholipid vesicles (liposomes). The method is based on the direct injection of a few microlitres of the gramicidin A-containing liposome suspension into the column, which is eluted with a non-polar solvent, such as tetrahydrofuran. The type and amount of information which can be derived from this methodology have been evaluated. Using this chromatographic approach, a correlation has been unambiguously shown to exist between the organization of the peptide in the vesicles and a number of variables involved in the…

Ion transport through membranes: A computer experiment

1983

Abstract Gramicidin-A is a linear pentadecapeptide antibiotic, which forms transmembrane channels; these have a number of interesting conductance characteristics [1, 2 and Refs. therein], as for example high specific ion fluxes (a single channel carries about 10 7 sodium ions/sec at 25 °C, 1 M NaCl and 100 mV transmembrane d.d.p.) have a remarkable ion selectivity among the monovalent cations. The permeability ratios with respect to sodium were found to be in following order H + (150) > NH 4 + (8.9) > Cs + (5.8) > Rb + (5.5) > K + (3.9) > Na + (1.0) > Li + (0.33). The channel is impermeable to anions and to divalent cations and it exhibits saturation and maxima in conductance as a function …
