Novel Three-Phase Multilevel Inverter With Reduced Components for Low- and High-Voltage Applications

In this article, a novel multilevel topology for three-phase applications, having three-level and hybrid N -level modular configurations, enabling low-, medium-, and high-voltage operations, is presented. The proposed topology has several attractive features, namely reduced component count, being capacitor-, inductor-, and diode-free, lowering cost, control-complexity, and size, and can operate in a wide range of voltages and powers. Transitions from grid-connected to island operation of Smart Microgrids

In this paper a control methodology is presented to perform a bumpless transition from the on-grid to the offgrid of a smart microgrid. The derived controller manages the internal production in order to get to zero the tie-line active and reactive power flows so that the opening of the tie line breaker does not produce significant perturbations. Experimental tests performed on the microgrid built at the Polytechnic University of Bari demonstrated the effectiveness of the proposed control strategy.
Current characterisation for ultra low power wireless body area networks

The emerging area of body area networks (BAN) imposes challenging requirements on hardware and software to achieve the desired lifetimes for certain devices such as long term medical implants. In this paper, we propose a novel approach to the measurement and characterisation of the energy consumption of BAN devices. The approach uses a low cost energy auditing circuit and addresses the problem of accurately measuring low-level current consumption. This new technique will allow precise and analytical measurements of systems and components in terms of energy. This will help circuit designers minimise power consumption in BAN devices. CMOS Capacitance-to-Time Converter-Based Interface for Differential Capacitive Sensors

This paper presents pre-layout simulation results on a CMOS implementation of a capacitance-to-time converter-based electronic interface for differential capacitive sensors. Its simple architecture, comprising only three operational amplifiers (OA) and a digital mixer (inverted XOR gate) allows, by properly setting the values of seven biasing resistors, to fit the working range anywhere from few fF to hundreds of pF, giving the output quasi-digital signals (T and PW) in the useful μs-ms range (appropriate for direct interfacing with general purposes microcontrollers). A couple of illustrative examples are provided.

This paper describes the design of a reconfigurable architecture for implementing image processing algorithms. This architecture is a pipeline of small identical processing elements that contain a programmable logic device (FPGA) and double port memories. This processing system has been adapted to accelerate the computation of differential algorithms. Novel zero-current-transition circuit for three-phase buck rectifiers

ZCT circuits have already been proposed in the past and are becoming more and more popular in high power rectifiers and inverters where bipolar devices have to be used (IGBTs or even BJTs). Although ZCT techniques have already been applied to three-phase boost type topologies, no ZCT circuits have been proposed for three-phase buck-type topologies. The authors propose a new load independent ZCT circuit for a three-phase buck-type rectifier which achieves high noise reduction, voltage stress reduction and zero current transitions to almost all transitions of the rectifier's switches including the additional auxiliary switches.

Downed distribution conductors in overhead distribution systems, may not be a concern for equipment, but greatly challenge the safety of persons, as well as the integrity of properties. Upstream overcurrent protective devices may not be able to detect the magnitudes of fault currents resulting from these high-impedance faults. Novel constant current driver for ISFET/MEMFETs characterization

Abstract In the present work a new constant current driver for ISFETs and MEMFETs sensors has been developed. The proposed circuit maintains the ISFET/MEMFET operation point at constant drain–source current and voltage. The combination of some programmable current sources and an appropriate selection of a simple precision resistor allow a good ISFET/MEMFET polarization. The use of operational amplifiers with low offset and drift are required to provide the buffering function needed by the sensor.
