Effects of an incremental maximal endurance exercise stress-induced cortisol on cognitive performance

2019

Exercise; Cognitive functions; Cortisol Ejercicio físico; Funciones cognitivas; Cortisol Exercici físic; Funcions cognitives; Cortisol Objectives: It can be hypothesized that cognitive performance decreases after fatigue protocol when it coincides with the maximum peak of cortisol. The first aim of this study was to elucidate the effects of a single bout of high intensity exercise on behavioural (i.e., attention and memory) and physiological (i.e., salivary cortisol) responses. The second objective was to evaluate the effect of the performance of the cognitive tasks on cortisol levels. Methods: Thirty-four physically active men (at least 5 days/week of physical activity practice) 38.11 (1.5…

Espiritualidad y autoconciencia existencial en Tugendhat

2018

A GOVERNMENT WITHOUT PRIDE. ANTONIO ROSMINI’S “CATHOLIC” MODERNITY

2020

Antonio Rosmini is considered one of the leading Catholic philosophers in modern age. His reflections on politics, law and society can be very useful in facing the challenges coming from the so-called populist movements. M. Nicoletti suggests, in his last work, to consider Rosmini’s conception of human person not only as theLeitmotivof his political philosophy but, broadly speaking, as the real chance to build a society in line with the great tradition of Modernity and Christian values.

Polyoxypregnanes as safe, potent, and specific ABCB1-inhibitory pro-drugs to overcome multidrug resistance in cancer chemotherapy in vitro and in vivo

2021

Multidrug resistance (MDR) mediated by ATP binding cassette subfamily B member 1 (ABCB1) is significantly hindering effective cancer chemotherapy. However, currently, no ABCB1-inhibitory drugs have been approved to treat MDR cancer clinically, mainly due to the inhibitor specificity, toxicity, and drug interactions. Here, we reported that three polyoxypregnanes (POPs) as the most abundant constituents of Marsdenia tenacissima (M. tenacissima) were novel ABCB1-modulatory pro-drugs, which underwent intestinal microbiota-mediated biotransformation in vivo to generate active metabolites. The metabolites at non-toxic concentrations restored chemosensitivity in ABCB1-overexpressing cancer cells v…

Characterization of the consistent completion of analytic hierarchy process comparison matrices using graph theory

2019

Decision-making is frequently affected by uncertainty and/or incomplete information, which turn decision-making into a complex task. It is often the case that some of the actors involved in decision-making are not sufficiently familiar with all of the issues to make the appropriate decisions. In this paper, we are concerned about missing information. Specifically, we deal with the problem of consistently completing an analytic hierarchy process comparison matrix and make use of graph theory to characterize such a completion. The characterization includes the degree of freedom of the set of solutions and a linear manifold and, in particular, characterizes the uniqueness of the solution, a re…

Some awkward issues on pairwise comparison matrices

2017

Many decision-making techniques use pairwise comparisons (PCs) elicited by one or more stakeholders involved in a given corresponding decision-making process. In very complex problems, the number of criteria or options to be compared may be too large, thus limiting PC applicability to large-scale decision problems due to the so-called curse of dimensionality, that is, a large number of pairwise comparisons need to be produced from a decision maker. For example, in AHP, Saaty [1] recommends that to obtain a reasonable and consistent PC matrix, the number of comparing elements should be at most seven. In [2] and [3], arguing on limitations of the human capabilities, the maximum number of elem…

Metformin influences drug sensitivity in pancreatic cancer cells

2018

Abstract Pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC) is an aggressive, highly metastatic malignancy and accounts for 85% of pancreatic cancers. PDAC patients have poor prognosis with a five-year survival of only 5–10% after diagnosis and treatment. Pancreatic cancer has been associated with type II diabetes as the frequency of recently diagnosed diabetics that develop pancreatic cancer within a 10-year period of initial diagnosis of diabetes in increased in comparison to non-diabetic patients. Metformin is a very frequently prescribed drug used to treat type II diabetes. Metformin acts in part by stimulating AMP-kinase (AMPK) and results in the suppression of mTORC1 activity and the induction o…

Effects of fatiguing jumping exercise on mRNA expression of titin-complex proteins and calpains.

2009

Eccentric exercise induced by electrostimulation increases mRNA expression of titin-complex proteins in rodent skeletal muscle. In this study, mRNA expression of titin, muscle LIM protein (MLP), cardiac ankyrin repeat protein (CARP), ankyrin repeat domain protein 2 (Ankrd2), diabetes-related ankyrin repeat protein (DARP), and calcium-activated proteinases, calpains, were investigated in human skeletal muscle after fatiguing jumping exercise. Fatiguing jumping exercise did not change mRNA expression of titin, DARP, calpain 1, or calpain 3. MLP, Ankrd2 and calpain 2 mRNA levels were increased 2 days postexercise. CARP mRNA level was already elevated 30 min and remained elevated 2 days postexe…
