During processing of poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET) hydrolytic chain scission, induced by the presence of small amounts of water, is the main cause of degradation. During repeated reprocessing chain scission can also occur because of the presence of other polymeric contaminants like PVC. Grapevine fruit set: Physiology of the abscission zone

Effects of ethylene and of 'anti-ethylene' compounds on the floral pedicel abscission zone in grapevines were analysed via a laboratory model consisting of isolated flowers held in Petri dishes. Our model permitted precise determination of abscission and enabled us to test a range of physiologically-active compounds including ethylene precursors, and antagonists of ethylene action. For example, a precursor of ethylene, 1-aminocyclopropane-l-carboxylic acid, had the same effect as ethylene in promoting abscission. Conversely, an inhibition of ethylene action by silver thiosulfate or an inhibition of ethylene synthesis by amino-oxyacetic acid both strongly inhibited abscission zone function. …

Thermodynamically induced shear degradation

The shear degradation of polymers in semiconcentrated solutions is viewed as a function of solvent quality. It is shown that the deterioration of the thermodynamic quality of the solvent leads to a marked flow resistance due to an increasing number of contacts between the chains. This may be probed by viscosimetric measurements as well as by degradation experiments (“thermodynamically induced shear degradation”). The recycling of homogeneous high density polyethylene from containers for liquids gives rise to materials having mechanical properties that are strongly dependent on the reprocessing apparatus and the processing conditions. Melt stabilization of wet polyamide 6

Abstract Melt processing of polycondensate polymers must be carried out after careful drying in order to avoid any hydrolytic chain scission caused by the presence of water or other small molecules. In this work, the effect of two different antioxidants on the processing and flow properties of a polyamide 6 sample not dried before processing operations has been studied. One of these stabilizers seems to protect the wet polymer from hydrolytic chain scission. This action has been interpreted considering that the stabilizer hydrolyses instead of the polyamide macromolecules.

Does communal context bring the worst in narcissists?

The present experiment (N = 95) investigated the relations of narcissism with social value orientation under facade conditions of testing communal or agentic traits (or none – in a control condition). The results indicated that narcissism predicted less willingness to share resources with others and more competitive orientation in a facade communal condition compared to the remaining two conditions: control and agentic. The results confirm narcissistic disregard for communal domain and are consistent with the extended agency model of narcissism and the “success as a drawback” effect.

Models of the population playing the Rock-Paper-Scissors game

We consider discrete dynamical systems coming from the models of evolution of populations playing rock - paper - scissors game . Asymptotic behaviour of trajectories of these systems is described, occurrence of the Neimark-Sacker bifurcation and nonexistence of time averages are proved.
