Associational Activeness and Attitudes towards Political Citizenship in Finland from a Comparative Perspective
2009
This article first focuses on the development of the system of associations and association memberships in Finland as well as additional forms of political participation from a comparative perspective and, second, expands the examination by analysing ‘objective’ and ‘subjective’ dimensions of participation, i.e., the development of the number of Finnish association memberships and people's ideas of, and attitudes towards political citizenship. The typology of polity regimes adopted in this article (Schofer & Fourcade-Gourinchas) functions as a structuring scheme for understanding the differentia specifica of Finnish political participation. Two structural characteristics of the civil societ…
Social Participation Through Volunteering as Co-production of Public Services: Case Study of Latvia
2016
Active civic and social participation is considered to be significantly important for a country`s development in democratic societies. One of the popular forms of active citizenship is volunteering – the third economy sector that produces civic goods and/or services in which the public and private sectors are weak or inactive. In this aspect, volunteering is also a means for organized civil society to participate in the production of public services i.e. co-production. The aim of this research is the exploration of social participation in Latvia through volunteering, including its legal regulation and organizational setup, and identification of the aspects and prospects of volunteering in L…

2013
The aim of this work is to study the journalistic treatment that the protest agains…
Patsy Healey and Collaborative Planning (2005): Re-thinking Democracy in the ‘Reasoning in Public’ Arena
2022
The interpretation of the notion of citizenship has led some authors to the conclusion of the necessity of overcoming a ‘restricted conception’ of citizenship, in order to gain a more inclusive recognition of a cosmopolitan, rather than a mere universal, recognition of rights. So, three core issues are tightly intertwined in this paper: the controversial issue of citizenship in its multiple facets: the formal that is institutional, the substantial and the denied one; the role of planning and its ethical implications; and the very idea of democracy in its dichotomy: institutional versus substantial. Patsy Healey’s work offers us a wide set of normative perspectives and intellectual stimuli, …

2021
Mental health care policies call for health-promoting and recovery-oriented interventions, as well as community-based programs supporting healthier habits. School administrators’ perceptions of democratic coexistence in Catalan schools: An analytical study
2022
In democratic societies, education should help build a participative, critical and responsible citizenry and therefore promote the role of schools as settings where students learn democratic coexistence. With the study reported on here we aimed to analyse how coexistence is fostered in classrooms and schools, as well as the possible synergy between schools’ efforts to educate in democratic coexistence, and the children’s social participation in their setting. To do so, we focused on the perspective of 476 school administrators at schools in Catalonia (Spain) based on an ad-hoc questionnaire comprised of 22 items on a Likert scale. The results reflect settings that value democratic coexisten…
Diaspora, Home-State Governance and Transnational Political Mobilisation: A Comparative Case Analysis of Ethiopia and Kenya’s State Policy Towards th…
2020
Aligned to studies that have established that state-diaspora engagement policies consist of a diversity of measures associated with different aims, this study provides a novel approach to such research. It involves investigating how leadership (through diaspora policies) is structured using language to ensure that the objectives of state-diaspora policies are persuasive enough to draw consensual support from the diaspora. Adopting a rhetorical analysis of multi-case data, this paper compares how the notion of diaspora is used within Ethiopia and Kenya’s state-diaspora policy documents and how their understanding of their diaspora shapes the actual political mobilisation of it. The paper dem…
