Unia Europejska i Unia Euroazjatycka w kontekście obywatelstwa : podobieństwa i różnice
2018
EUROPEAN INSTITUTIONS ON SOCIAL MEDIA ‒ SHAPING THE NOTION OF EUROPEAN CITIZENSHIP
2017
Abstract This study supports topical discussion about the possibilities to use social media as a tool for citizen involvement in democratic processes. Contemporary academic views and statistics on the use of social media for communication between institutions and citizens are gathered in the study. The research focus is on social media publications, analysing the content of four European Parliament’s social media accounts in Latvian during the period from 1 July 2015 to 31 December 2015. The aim of the research is to identify the potential of the information published on European Parliament’s social media accounts in shaping the European citizenship notion among youth in Latvia. The conclus…
Five Years of the Citizens Directive in the UK - Part 1
2011
This two-part article reviews how the UK authorities have fared in the practical application of Directive 2004/38/EC in the five years since it entered into force. It identifies and examines the most common problems faced by EU citizens when seeking to have their rights recognised by the UK authorities applying the Immigration (European Economic Area) Regulations 2006 by reference to questions and complaints received by Your Europe Advice. In examining the experience of EU citizens and their family members living in the UK, account is taken of a number of recent judgments of the European Court of Justice concerning EU citizenship, including Metock, Lassal, Eman & Sevinger and Ruiz Zambrano.…
Social constitutionalism and the sustainable development goals (sdg)
2021
U.S. Expansionism, Mexican Undocumented Migration, and American Obligations
2011
In his compelling piece, “Living in a Promiseland? Mexican Immigration and American Obligations,” Rogers Smith argues that the greater the degree to which the U.S. has coercively constituted the identities of non-citizens in ways that have made having certain relationships to America fundamental to their capacities to lead free and meaningful lives, the greater the obligations the U.S. has to facilitate those relationships. Over the last hundred years, many rural communities in Mexico have been constituted more by U.S. immigration policy and the labor demands of U.S. employers than by similar policies and economic factors in Mexico. According to Smith, this means that Mexicans may be owed “…
Why Does Cultural Diversity Foster Technology-enabled Intergenerational Collaboration?
2019
Globalization and information technology enable people to join the movement of global citizenship and work without borders. However, different type of barriers existed that could affect collaboration in todays work environment, in which different generations are involved. Although researchers have identified several technical barriers to intergenerational collaboration (iGOAL), the influence of cultural diversity on iGOAL has rarely been studied. Therefore, using a quantitative study approach, this paper investigates the impact of differences in cultural background on perceived technical and operational barriers to iGOAL. Our study reveals six barriers to IGC that are perceived differently …
Conclusions, Discussion, and Policy Implications
2016
Our research on Latvian older women challenges the trope of vulnerability which generally surrounds the framing of older migrants’ lives. Through their ability to be mobile, find work, and experience a sensual reawakening, Latvian older women are able to question stereotypes about ageing and older women. They are able to escape their poor, dead-end lives in Latvia and develop a better future for themselves. The findings of the book offer policymakers insights into the realities of ageing working migrants, pensions policy, a more inclusive transnational citizenship, the need for better working conditions, and ongoing care arrangements for older migrants post-retirement, either abroad or back…
2020
Freely available healthcare, universally accessible to the population of citizens, is a key ideal for European welfare systems. As labor migration of the twentieth century gave way to the globalized streams of the twenty-first century, new challenges to fulfilling these ideals have emerged. The principle of freedom of movement, together with large-scale forced migration have led to large scale movements of people, making new demands on European healthcare systems which had previously been largely focused on meeting sedentary local populations' needs. Drawing on interviews with service providers working for NGOs and public healthcare systems and with policy makers across 10 European countrie…
Uncertain sunset lives: British migrants facing Brexit in Spain
2020
One of the most concerned groups potentially impacted by the approval of Brexit in 2016 is that of the so-called “Brexpats”. This group of people is composed by at least 784,900 British citizens who are living in the European Union (EU), among which those settling in Spain are the most prominent. Spanish Brexpats are the largest British population outside the borders of the UK, except for in the Commonwealth territories. They have some peculiar characteristics, such as an advanced average age compared to other EU destinations; a large number of people living off the radar; geographical concentration within coastal areas; and a certain social isolation. In this context, the succession of new…
Empowering Media Citizenship through Educommunication
2014
