Piccoli giardini : percorsi civici a New York City

2017

Budżet obywatelski – analiza porównawcza Gorzowa Wielkopolskiego i Opola

2020

Citizens’ Participation : Palermo, an Italian Case Study of Civic Engagement

2019

Since the 1990s, much of the international literature on participation has been focused on the disaffection of citizens to- ward politics (Rosanvallon, 2008, 2011); the connection be- tween representative democracy and deliberative democracy (Macaluso, 2007); the presence of citizens in policy making and the new forms of participation. However, in the last few years, the civic engagement experiences have been numerous in the whole world. We can distinguish between top–down and bottom–up forms of governance promoted by citizens. In this paper we discuss some forms of bottom–up participation of citizens.

The usage of social media among young adults living in Nairobi, Kenya : only entertainment or contributions to societal change?

2015

Social media usage has been found to have increased all over the world, also in the so-called developing countries. Although the percentages are still rather low, it can be argued that the use of social media is becoming increasingly important also in African countries. Kenya has been found to be one of the leading countries regarding social media usage in East Africa. Although research on social media has been conducted, for instance, on the use of social media in protest movements and in the areas of users’ motivation, less emphasis has been placed on their developmental aspects. Thus, to gain a deeper understanding of the usage of social media in the so-called developing countries, this …

The Public Artist as a Fringe Agent for Sustainability: Practices of Environmentalist Driven Art-Activism and Their Digital Perspectives

2022

The chapter investigates today’s intersection of visual arts and sustainability, which developed thanks to the civic agency of public artists especially concerned with environmental issues. Since its inception, public art operated on the fringe, thus framing a space for new practices and wider audiences. Drawing on an interdisciplinary analysis of the last two decades that shaped sustainable art practices, the chapter explores key concepts, practices, categories, and exemplary artworks that defined public art as a form of activism addressing environmental concerns. The chapter analyzes examples of ecological interventions, community engagement, radical actions, and digital sharing that effi…

Understanding Civic Engagement on Social Media Based on Users’ Motivation to Contribute

2021

Social media offer various opportunities for civic engagement by, e.g., liking, sharing, or posting relevant content. Users’ motivation to contribute to relevant topics is quite divers and can stem from an intrinsic motivation to do good or external incentives such as being recognised and rewarded by other users. In our study, we adopt self-determination theory, which defines motivation as broad continuum ranging from intrinsic motivation to external regulation. We conducted a quantitative survey with 667 Facebook users to identify how the different kinds of motivation impact the users’ behaviour in terms of reading, liking, sharing, commenting, and posting topics relevant to civic engageme…
