Development of net energy ratio and emission factor for quad-generation pathways
2014
Published version of an article in the journal: Energy Systems. Also available from the publisher at: http://dx.doi.org/10.1007/s12667-014-0126-4 The conversion of biomass to four different outputs via gasification is a renewable technology that could reduce the use of fossil fuels and greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. This study investigates the energy aspects for a new concept of biomass based quad-generation plant producing power, heat, methanol and methane. Circulating fluidized bed gasifier and the gas technology institute (GTI) gasifier technologies are used for this quad-generation process. Two different biomass feedstocks are considered in this study. The net energy ratio for six diff…
Cross-listing, price discovery and the informativeness of the trading process
2003
This paper analyzes the price discovery process of securities that trade at multiple markets with trading sessions that totally or partially overlap. Building on Hasbrouck (1995) information share approach, we introduce a methodology that distinguishes two sources of information asymmetries between markets: trade-related and trade-unrelated informative shocks. This approach determines how much of each market?s relative contribution to the price discovery process during the overlapping period is attributable to its own trading activity. We provide empirical evidence on the contribution of the NYSE in the price discovery process of the Spanish cross-listed stocks during the daily two-hour ove…
Regional effects of monetary policy in the U.S.: An empirical re-assessment
2020
Abstract This paper provides an empirical re-assessment of the regional effects of monetary policy in the U.S. We use the narrative series of Romer and Romer (2004) as a measure of monetary policy shocks and impulse response functions estimated directly from a single equation spatial model. We find that monetary policy tightening leads to a persistent decrease in regional real personal income and employment, with asymmetric effects across regions that are magnified by spatial spillovers. The magnitude of the effects depends on the period under analysis and on the direction of the monetary policy shock. We also provide evidence of the existence of the interest rate and the housing market cha…
Elastic Recoil Detection Analysis
2008
In 1976, a Canadian group described in detail for the first time a new ion beam analytical method based on the elastic recoil of target nuclei collided with high-energy heavy incident ions. In this case, 25–40-MeV 35Cl impinged on a multilayer C or Cu (backing)/LiF or LiOH/Cu (30–150 nm)/LiF or LiOH and H, Li, O, and F recoiled atoms were detected. These exemplified the main characteristics of elastic recoil detection analysis (ERDA): its sensitivity to depth distribution and its ability to detect light elements in heavy substrates. In 1979, the use of megaelectronvolt energy 4He beams permitted the use of ERDA to be extended to depth profiling of hydrogen isotopes in the near-surface regio…
Erratum: An Inverse Backscatter Problem for Electric Impedance Tomography
2011
We fix an incorrect statement from our paper [M. Hanke, N. Hyvonen, and S. Reusswig, SIAM J. Math. Anal., 41 (2009), pp. 1948–1966] claiming that two different perfectly conducting inclusions necessarily have different backscatter in impedance tomography. We also present a counterexample to show that this kind of nonuniqueness does indeed occur.
Applying Spring Security Framework with KeyCloak-Based OAuth2 to Protect Microservice Architecture APIs: A Case Study
2022
In this study, we implemented an integrated security solution with Spring Security and Keycloak open-access platform (SSK) to secure data collection and exchange over microservice architecture application programming interfaces (APIs). The adopted solution implemented the following security features: open authorization, multi-factor authentication, identity brokering, and user management to safeguard microservice APIs. Then, we extended the security solution with a virtual private network (VPN), Blowfish and crypt (Bcrypt) hash, encryption method, API key, network firewall, and secure socket layer (SSL) to build up a digital infrastructure. To accomplish and describe the adopted SSK solutio…
Semiactive Control Methodologies for Suspension Control With Magnetorheological Dampers
2012
Authors version of an article published in the journal: IEEE/ASME Transactions on Mechatronics. Also available from the publisher at: http://dx.doi.org/10.1109/TMECH.2011.2107331 Suspension systems are one of the most critical components of transportation vehicles. They are designed to provide comfort to the passengers to protect the chassis and the freight. Suspension systems are normally provided with dampers that mitigate these harmful and uncomfortable vibrations. In this paper, we explore two control methodologies (in time and frequency domain) used to design semiactive controllers for suspension systems that make use of magnetorheological dampers. These dampers are known because of th…
Heuristic and Backstepping Control Strategies for Semiactive Suspension in Automotive Systems Equipped with MR Dampers
2010
Abstract This paper deals with the problem of semiactive vibration reduction in a class of automotive systems. Most conventional suspensions use passive devices to absorb impacts and vibrations, which is generally difficult to adapt to the uncertain circumstances. Semiactive suspension techniques promise a solution to the above problem with some comparatively better features than active and passive suspension devices. In this work, the semiactive suspension with magnetorheological (MR) dampers is applied for the vibration attenuation. Both backstepping and heuristic control strategies are proposed. In the design of backstepping controller, the Dahl model of the MR damper is used to estimate…
Robust adaptive backstepping control design for a Nonlinear Hydraulic-Mechanical System
2009
The complex dynamics that characterize hydraulic systems make it difficult for the control design to achieve prescribed goals in an efficient manner. In this paper, we present the design and analysis of a robust nonlinear controller for a Nonlinear Hydraulic-Mechanical (NHM) System. The system consists of an electrohydraulic servo valve and two hydraulic cylinders. Specifically, by considering a part of the dynamics of the NHM system as a norm-bounded uncertainty, two adaptive controllers are developed based on the backstepping technique that ensure the tracking error signals asymptotically converge to zero despite the uncertainties in the system according to the Barbalat lemma. The resulti…
Nonlinear Control of a Pneumatic Muscle Actuator System
2001
Abstract The performance of a Pneumatic Muscle Actuator under three tracking control strategies is compared: robust backstepping, sliding-mode and gain scheduling. Robustness is assured for the three controllers in the presence of model uncertainties and external perturbations. Exponential stability is proved for the sliding-mode tracking controller, ultimate boundedness for the backstepping tracking controller and exponential stability for constant or slowly-varying reference signals for the gain scheduling controller. Computer simulations show a good performance for the tracking of a sine wave by the first two controllers, although the sliding-mode strategy yields a high-frequency switchi…
