Fourth case of louse-borne relapsing fever in Young Migrant, Sicily, Italy, December 2015. Mini Review Article
2016
Abstract Objectives Currently louse-borne relapsing fever (LBRF) is primarily found in limited endemic foci in Ethiopia, Somalia and Sudan; no case of imported LBRF has been reported in Europe in the 9 years prior to 2015. The aim of our paper is to describe a new case of imported LBRF detected in Sicily, Italy, and to review all cases reported in migrants arrived in Europe in the last 10 years. Study design Mini review of all published cases of louse-borne relapsing fever in Europe in the last 10 years. Methods A computerized search without language restriction was conducted using PubMed combining the terms ‘(louse-borne relapsing fever or LBRF or recurrentis) and (refugee or Europe or mig…
Inhibition of xanthine oxidase to prevent statin-induced myalgia and rhabdomiolysis
2015
Although statins remain the cornerstone of lipid-lowering therapy for reducing the burden of atherosclerotic vascular disease, their administration has been associated with muscle-related adverse effects, including myalgia and rhabdomyolysis. Such adverse events are probably due to reduced antioxidant defenses associated with fewer intermediate metabolites in the cholesterol synthesis pathway. We hypothesize that the concomitant inhibition of xanthine oxidase via coadministration of allopurinol with statins could diminish reactive oxygen species (ROS)-related muscle damage, which would have in turn have positive effects on both the incidence of muscle-related adverse events and cardiovascul…
Mediterranean spotted fever: clinical and laboratory characteristics of 415 Sicilian children
2006
Abstract Background Mediterranean spotted fever (MSF) is an acute febrile, zoonotic disease caused by Rickettsia conorii and transmitted to humans by the brown dogtick Rhipicephalus sanguineus. Nearly four hundred cases are reported every year (mainly from June to September) on the Italian island of Sicily. The aim of the study was to analyze the clinical and laboratory characteristics of patients with MSF and the efficacy of the drugs administered. Methods Our study was carried out on 415 children with MSF, during the period January 1997 – December 2004, at the "G. Di Cristina" Children's hospital in Palermo, Sicily, Italy. On admission patients' clinical history, physical and laboratory e…
AbstractThis text confirms that the funerary monument commissioned in 1609 by Juan Alfonso Pimentel, count-duke of Benavente to the genoese sculptors Giuseppe Carlone and Oberto Casella was for friar Domingo Anadon in the dominican convent …
Inter and intra-guild interactions in egg parasitoid species of the soybean stink bug complex
2002
Abstract – The objective of this research was to evaluate the parasitism behavior of Telenomus podisiAshmead, Trissolcus basalis (Wollaston) e Trissolcus urichi Crawford (Hymenoptera: Scelionidae) oneggs of Nezara viridula L., Euschistus heros F., Piezodorus guildinii Westwood and Acrosternumaseadum Rolston (Heteroptera: Pentatomidae), in no choice and multiple choice experiments. For allparasitoid species, the results demonstrated the existence of a main host species that maximizes thereproductive success. The competitive interactions among the parasitoid species were investigated inexperiments of sequential and simultaneous release of different combinations of parasitoid pairs on thehosts…

Perceived goal setting practices across a competitive season
2019
Goal setting is an effective and frequently used tool for performance enhancement in sports. However, in the previous studies, the focus has been on goal effectiveness among individual male athletes and at one point in time. Therefore, the purpose of this longitudinal study was to examine goal setting practices in women’s sport teams across a competitive season from players’ individual and team perspectives. A total of 146 female players representing 24 teams in ice hockey, ringette, or floorball completed three online surveys. Surveys focused on setting outcome, process, and performance goals, as well as evaluating the follow-through of setting goals and actually reaching these goals acro…
Supramolecular Modification of ABC Triblock Terpolymers in Confinement Assembly
2018
The self-assembly of AB diblock copolymers in three-dimensional (3D) soft confinement of nanoemulsions has recently become an attractive bottom up route to prepare colloids with controlled inner morphologies. In that regard, ABC triblock terpolymers show a more complex morphological behavior and could thus give access to extensive libraries of multicompartment microparticles. However, knowledge about their self-assembly in confinement is very limited thus far. Here, we investigated the confinement assembly of polystyrene-block-poly(4-vinylpyridine)-block-poly(tert-butyl methacrylate) (PS-b-P4VP-b-PT or SVT) triblock terpolymers in nanoemulsion droplets. Depending on the block weight fractio…
Alcohol-Selective Oxidation in Water under Mild Conditions via a Novel Approach to Hybrid Composite Photocatalysts
2015
Abstract The oxidation of alcohols to carbonyl compounds in a clean fashion (i.e., with water as a solvent or under solvent‐free conditions, and using O2 or H2O2 as the primary oxidant) is the subject of considerable research efforts. A new approach for the selective oxidation of soluble aromatic alcohols in water under mild conditions via a novel composite photocatalyst has been developed. The catalyst is synthesized by grafting 4‐(4‐(4‐hydroxyphenylimino)cyclohexa‐2,5dienylideneamino)phenol and silver nanoparticles onto the surface of moderately crystalline titanium dioxide. The titanium dioxide‐based composite was first extensively characterized and then employed in the catalytic oxidati…
In Silico Analysis of Microarray-Based Gene Expression Profiles Predicts Tumor Cell Response to Withanolides
2012
Withania somnifera (L.) Dunal (Indian ginseng, winter cherry, Solanaceae) is widely used in traditional medicine. Roots are either chewed or used to prepare beverages (aqueous decocts). The major secondary metabolites of Withania somnifera are the withanolides, which are C-28-steroidal lactone triterpenoids. Withania somnifera extracts exert chemopreventive and anticancer activities in vitro and in vivo. The aims of the present in silico study were, firstly, to investigate whether tumor cells develop cross-resistance between standard anticancer drugs and withanolides and, secondly, to elucidate the molecular determinants of sensitivity and resistance of tumor cells towards withanolides. Usi…
