Genetic Diversity of Liparis loeselii in Latvia
2018
Abstract According to the Global Strategy for Plant Conservation, 75% of endangered species should be preserved in ex situ collections till 2020. The genus Liparis has a lot of recognised taxons, but only one species, Liparis loeselii (L.) Rich., grows in Europe. L. loeselii is a rare and endangered orchid species occurring in Europe. In Latvia L. loeselii is classified as the third category of endangered and protected species. To develop the best conservation strategy, the knowledge concerning the genetic differences of protected plants in a particular area is crucial. For this purpose, the genetic diversity of L. loeselii populations from different Latvian habitats was tested. The inter-r…
Optimization of the Red Tilapia (Oreochromis spp.) Viscera Hydrolysis for Obtaining Iron-Binding Peptides and Evaluation of In Vitro Iron Bioavailabi…
2020
Iron deficiencies continue to cause significant health problems in vulnerable populations. A good strategy to combat mineral deficiency includes fortification with iron-binding peptides. This research aims to determine the optimal conditions to hydrolyze red tilapia viscera (RTV) using Alcalase 2.4 L and recovery of iron-binding protein hydrolysate. The result showed that under the optimal hydrolysis condition including pH 10, 60 °
Interaction of mushroom tyrosinase with aromatic amines, o-diamines and o-aminophenols
2004
3-Amino-L-tyrosine was found to be a substrate of mushroom tyrosinase, contrary to what had previously been reported in the literature. A series of amino derivatives of benzoic acid were tested as substrates and inhibitors of the enzyme. 3-Amino-4-hydroxybenzoic acid, 4-amino-3-hydroxybenzoic acid and 3,4-diaminobenzoic acid were oxidized by this enzyme, as previously reported for Neurospora crassa tyrosinase, but 4-aminobenzoic acid and 3-aminobenzoic acid were not. Interestingly, 3-amino-4-hydroxybenzoic acid was oxidized five times faster than 4-amino-3-hydroxybenzoic acid, confirming the importance of proton transfer from the hydroxyl group at C-4 position. All compounds inhibited the m…
Smart prototype selection for machine learning based on ignorance zones analysis
2018
The size of databases has been considerably growing over recent decades and Machine Learning algorithms are not ready to process such large volume of information. Being one of the most useful algorithms in Data Mining the Nearest neighbor classifier suffers from high storage requirements and slow response when working with large data sets. Prototype Selection methods help to alleviate this problem by choosing a subset of data with a smaller size. In this thesis, the overview of existing instance selection methods is provided together with the introduction of a new approach. The majority of current methods select a subset experimentally by checking whether certain point affects classificatio…

Materiał i metody. Materiał i metody. Materiał i metody.
Psychometric Evaluation of the Norwegian Versions of the Modified Group Environment Questionnaire and the Youth Sport Environment Questionnaire
2021
This study aimed to translate the modified Group Environment Questionnaire (GEQ) and the Youth Sport Environment Questionnaire (YSEQ) into Norwegian, examine the factor structure and reliability of the scales through independent clusters model confirmatory factor analysis (ICM-CFA) and exploratory structural equation modeling (ESEM), and examine differential item functioning (DIF) as a function of sex. Three-hundred-and-thirty-three athletes (M(SD)age = 18.7(2.60) years; 33% females) completed the GEQ. Three-hundred-and-three athletes (M(SD)age = 15.0(1.48) years; 26% females) completed the YSEQ. Results indicated acceptable fit indices for a four-factor, a second-order two-factor (task a…
Effects of training on bone metabolism in young athletes
2021
Purpose. This study investigated the effects of two types of training on the bone formation marker of osteocalcin and the bone resorption marker of tartrate-resistant acid phosphatase isoenzyme 5b (TRAP5b) in young track and field boys and girls. Methods. The 14-year-old group (10 boys, 10 girls) performed first time an intensive and supervised 8-week plyometric training. In the 17-year-old group (13 athletic boys, 6 control boys, 12 athletic girls, 6 control girls), the normal many-sided track and field training lasted 6 months. Results. Significant increases were noticed in osteocalcin (p < 0.01) both in younger boys and girls. The 20-m sprint performance improved in girls (p < 0.01) and …
Ultrafast Interface Charge Separation in Carbon Nanodot-Nanotube Hybrids
2021
Carbon dots are an emerging family of zero-dimensional nanocarbons behaving as tunable light harvesters and photoactivated charge donors. Coupling them to carbon nanotubes, which are well-known electron acceptors with excellent charge transport capabilities, is very promising for several applications. Here, we first devised a route to achieve the stable electrostatic binding of carbon dots to multi- or single-walled carbon nanotubes, as confirmed by several experimental observations. The photoluminescence of carbon dots is strongly quenched when they contact either semiconductive or conductive nanotubes, indicating a strong electronic coupling to both. Theoretical simulations predict a favo…
Purification and partial characterization of aminopeptidase from barley (Hordeum vulgare L.) seeds.
2013
Aminopeptidases (EC 3.4.11) are proteolytic enzymes, which hydrolyze one amino acid from N-terminus of peptidic substrates. Inhibitors of plant aminopeptidases can find an application in agriculture as herbicides. Isolation and partial characterization of aminopeptidase from barley (Hordeum vulgare L.) seeds has been described. The enzyme was purified to molecular homogeneity using a six-step purification procedure (precipitation with (NH4)2SO4, followed by chromatography on Sephadex G-25, DEAE-Sepharose, Sephacryl HR 300, Macro-Prep Q and Phenyl-Sepharose HP columns). The enzyme was purified 365-fold with recovery above 18%. The molecular weight of the purified enzyme was determined by SDS…
Energy level determination of purine containing blue light emitting organic compounds
2018
Organic light emitting diodes (OLED) have found their applications in the mobile and TV screens. Till now the commercially available diodes are made by expensive thermal evaporation in a vacuum. The costs of OLED fabrication could be decreased by applying low-cost wet casting methods, for example, spin-coating. In this work, we have studied a group of blue light emitting purine derivatives which could potentially be used in OLEDs. The advantage of these compounds is their ability to form amorphous thin films from solutions. All the thin films were prepared by the spincoating method from chloroform solution on ITO glass. The position of hole and electron transport energy levels is important …
