Content analysis of Spanish judgements addressing the sexual transmission of HIV: 1996-2016.

2018

This study performed a content analysis of the language of the Spanish judgements addressing the sexual transmission of HIV in order to determine its possible interrelationship with HIV-related stigma. All judgements and writs dictated by Spanish penal and civil jurisdictions between 1981 and December 2016 were obtained through a systematic search of the Spanish legal databases. The inclusion criterion was that the possible transmission of HIV was judged as an individual infraction, regardless of whether other infractions were involved. Twenty judgements were selected and analysed through direct content analysis assisted by the software MAXQDA 12. The majority of the cases (85%) were brough…

Closure to “Experimental Study of the Stage-Discharge Relationship for an Upstream Inclined Grid with Longitudinal Bars” by C. Di Stefano and V. Ferro

2014

The discusser would like to thank the authors of the original paper for investigating the outflow process of an upstream inclined grid with longitudinal bars using the dimensional analysis and the incomplete self-similarity theory. The discusser, however, would like to add a few points. Using the theoretical analysis the authors of the original paper showed that a power equation can be used for establishing the stage-discharge equation of an upstream inclined grid with longitudinal bars. The authors of the original paper also showed that the coefficient and exponent of the power equation depend on the slope angle and the void ratio. They proposed a stage-discharge equation

The value of value: Further excursions on the meaning and role of customer value

2011

Grounded on fundamental marketing principles, the concept of customer value has been revisited and refined by academicians and practitioners for the last 30 years. However, research devoted to achieving a consistent theoretical and conceptual development of valuerelated concepts has proceeded apace without ever reaching full closure. The present essay seeks reasons behind remaining deficiencies in value-related research and offers a review intended to move our understanding of customer value toward what promises to become a more enlightened future. The topic of value is approached by theoretical analysis and conceptual development. First, ‘‘the challenge’’ of value research is presented: th…

Explaining the Inexplicable: Differences in Attributions for the Holocaust in Germany, Israel, and Poland

2016

Seventy years have passed since the Holocaust, but this cataclysmic event continues to reverberate in the present. In this research, we examine attributions about the causes of the Holocaust and the influence of such attributions on intergroup relations. Three representative surveys were conducted among Germans, Poles, and Israeli Jews to examine inter- and intragroup variations in attributions for the Holocaust and how these attributions influence intergroup attitudes. Results indicated that Germans made more external than internal attributions and were especially low in attributing an evil essence to their ancestors. Israelis and Poles mainly endorsed the obedient essence attribution and …

Own Risk and Solvency Assessment

2015

The own risk and solvency assessment under art. 45 of the Solvency II Directive forms the subject of this chapter. Initial attention is given to clarifying the role of ORSA in the insurance supervisory regime and the principles applicable to it. Then follows a discussion of the relationship of ORSA to the risk management function as well to the other key functions under the insurance supervisory regime. In conclusion, the chapter addresses, inter alia, the documentation, the public disclosure, and the supervisory powers involved in an ORSA procedure.

Linear stability analysis of gas-fluidized beds for the prediction of incipient bubbling conditions

2010

Abstract This work focuses on the development of a novel linear stability criterion for the state of homogeneous fluidization regime, based on a new mathematical model for gas-fluidized beds. The model is developed starting from the well-known particle bed model. A mono-dimensional momentum balance is derived leading to a set of equations which explicitly include voidage-gradient dependent terms (elastic force) for both solid and fluid phases. A fully predictive criterion for the stability of homogeneous fluidization state is here proposed, based on the well-known Wallis’ linear stability analysis. The criterion requires the choice of an appropriate averaging distance, which in the present …

Brownian motion in trapping enclosures: Steep potential wells, bistable wells and false bistability of induced Feynman-Kac (well) potentials

2019

We investigate signatures of convergence for a sequence of diffusion processes on a line, in conservative force fields stemming from superharmonic potentials $U(x)\sim x^m$, $m=2n \geq 2$. This is paralleled by a transformation of each $m$-th diffusion generator $L = D\Delta + b(x)\nabla $, and likewise the related Fokker-Planck operator $L^*= D\Delta - \nabla [b(x)\, \cdot]$, into the affiliated Schr\"{o}dinger one $\hat{H}= - D\Delta + {\cal{V}}(x)$. Upon a proper adjustment of operator domains, the dynamics is set by semigroups $\exp(tL)$, $\exp(tL_*)$ and $\exp(-t\hat{H})$, with $t \geq 0$. The Feynman-Kac integral kernel of $\exp(-t\hat{H})$ is the major building block of the relaxatio…

Thermodynamics and continuum fracture mechanics for nonlocal-elastic plastic materials

2002

Nonlocal elasticity is used as an improved elasticity model which engenders no crack-tip stress singularities and thus makes applicable the classical stress-based failure criteria. Considering nonlocal-elastic plastic materials exposed to softening by particle decohesion in a process surface and to subsequent surface separation by fracture, fracture mechanics is addressed within the framework of irreversible internal-variable thermodynamics in the hypothesis of small strains and arbitrary (but sufficiently regular) fracture surface (crack surface plus process surface). The state equations and the energy dissipation densities are derived for the bulk material and for the process surface, for…
