Reversing the Trend: a Psychosocial Intervention on Young Immigrants in Sicily
2018
Intervention projects based on providing support for immigrants can offer a number of benefits with regard to the social inclusion of young immigrants. Therefore, the actions suggested in this proposal may not only create a network between institutions and the private sector capable of supporting the intervention of a host country, but may also help to reduce the risk of crime as well as advocating a sense of otherness and integration. The approach to the project, a psychosocial intervention carried out on four young Africans who reached Sicily after crossing the Sicilian Channel on a dilapidated boat, has chiefly been to provide the four individuals with the chance to revisit their origina…
Valencian Politicians under the spotlight of the À Punt TV network: A study of television coverage of the 2019 regional elections
2020
Despite repeated failures by the former Valencian television network — Canal 9 [Channel 9] — to live up to its public broadcasting duties, the station’s closure in 2013 still came as a shock. The step by the regional government (then run by the Conservative Partido Popular — PP) had a huge public impact, depriving Valencians of their public TV network at a stroke. That is why Valencian society had high hopes when a new public media platform — Punt Mèdia — was launched. Among other things, politicians and broadcasters needed to show that a more even-handed, professional approach could be taken to media reporting. The 2019 Regional Elections were a wonderful opportunity to prove this. On the …
A Cross-Cultural Perspective on the Privacy Calculus
2017
The “privacy calculus” approach to studying online privacy implies that willingness to engage in disclosures on social network sites (SNSs) depends on evaluation of the resulting risks and benefits. In this article, we propose that cultural factors influence the perception of privacy risks and social gratifications. Based on survey data collected from participants from five countries (Germany [ n = 740], the Netherlands [ n = 89], the United Kingdom [ n = 67], the United States [ n = 489], and China [ n = 165]), we successfully replicated the privacy calculus. Furthermore, we found that culture plays an important role: As expected, people from cultures ranking high in individualism found i…
Dagger closure and solid closure in graded dimension two
2013
We introduce a graded version of dagger closure and prove that it coincides with solid closure for homogeneous ideals in two-dimensional N \mathbb {N} -graded domains of finite type over a field.
Unambiguous recognizable two-dimensional languages
2006
We consider the family UREC of unambiguous recognizable two-dimensional languages. We prove that there are recognizable languages that are inherently ambiguous, that is UREC family is a proper subclass of REC family. The result is obtained by showing a necessary condition for unambiguous recognizable languages. Further UREC family coincides with the class of picture languages defined by unambiguous 2OTA and it strictly contains its deterministic counterpart. Some closure and non-closure properties of UREC are presented. Finally we show that it is undecidable whether a given tiling system is unambiguous.
Factors contributing to verbal self-disclosure
2007
The phenomenon of self-disclosure has been actively studied in several sub-discliplines of psychology from the 1970s on, and neighbouring disciplines, such as social and communication sciences, have enriched the psychological understanding of the topic. The psychological literature on self-disclosure, which is viewed, sometimes as a trait-like construct, varying in degree from one person to another, and sometimes as an interpersonal process which occurs when individuals interact with each other, has addressed, in particular, the issues of reciprocity effect, sex differences, self-disclosure in intimate vs. non-intimate relationships, the benefits to be derived from disclosing, and the emoti…
Longest Motifs with a Functionally Equivalent Central Block
2004
International audience; This paper presents a generalization of the notion of longest repeats with a block of k don't care symbols introduced by [Crochemore et al., LATIN 2004] (for k fixed) to longest motifs composed of three parts: a first and last that parameterize match (that is, match via some symbol renaming, initially unknown), and a functionally equivalent central block. Such three-part motifs are called longest block motifs. Different types of functional equivalence, and thus of matching criteria for the central block are considered, which include as a subcase the one treated in [Crochemore et al., LATIN 2004] and extend to the case of regular expressions with no Kleene closure or …
Domains of accretive operators in Banach spaces
2016
LetD(A)be the domain of anm-accretive operatorAon a Banach spaceE. We provide sufficient conditions for the closure ofD(A)to be convex and forD(A)to coincide withEitself. Several related results and pertinent examples are also included.
Unitary Groups Acting on Grassmannians Associated with a Quadratic Extension of Fields
2006
Let (V, H) be an anisotropic Hermitian space of finite dimension over the algebraic closure of a real closed field K. We determine the orbits of the group of isometries of (V, H) in the set of K-subspaces of V . Throughout the paper K denotes a real closed field and K its algebraic closure. Then it is well known (see, for example, [4, Chapter 2], [23]; see also [8]) that K = K(i) with i = √−1. Also we let (V,H) be an anisotropic Hermitian space (with respect to the involution underlying the quadratic field extension K/K) of finite dimension n over K. In this context we consider the natural action of the unitary group U = U(V,H) of isometries of (V,H) on the set Xd of all ddimensional K-subs…
