<i>Background/Aims:</i> Restenosis after percutaneous transluminal angioplasty (PTA) of the internal mammary artery (IMA) grafts is much less pronounced than in other arteries and venous grafts. The aim of the study was to test whether various arteries respond differently to dilatation. <i>Methods:</i> PTA of the IMA, carotid, renal and circumflex coronary (RCx) arteries was performed in 9 pigs (balloon to artery ratio of 1:1.5). The fate of 106 collaterals was investigated following percutaneous transluminal dilatation of 113 stenoses and occlusions. Following dilatation, 78% of collaterals were unchanged and 22% could no longer be demonstrated. The success of the dilatation had no bearing on the fate of the collaterals. Collaterals beginning or ending in a dilated portion of vessel disappeared more frequently (30%) than the others (11%). Following five dilatations, some vessels were demonstrated in the area of stenosis, which had not been demonstrated previously. Percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) for chronic total occlusions (CTOs) has been rapidly evolving during recent years. With improvement in equipment and techniques, high success rates can be achieved at experienced centers, although overall success rates remain low. Prospective, randomized-controlled data regarding optimal use and indications for CTO PCI remain limited. CTO PCI should be performed when the anticipated benefit exceeds the potential risk. New high-quality studies of the clinical outcomes and techniques of CTO PCI are needed, as is the expansion of expert centers and operators that can achieve excellent clinical outcomes in this challenging patient and lesion subgroup. Percutaneous transluminal angioplasty (PTA) was performed in 22 patients (13 women and nine men; mean age 57 years [44-74] ) with symptomatic obstruction of the subclavian artery which was due to arteriosclerotic stenosis in 14, occlusion in six patients, radiogenic multiple stenoses in one (after radiotherapy for breast cancer), and stenoses of the left and right subclavian artery in one patient with Takayasu's arteritis. Intravascular ultrasound has been used for >20 years to guide percutaneous coronary intervention in different subsets of coronary lesions. During the last decade, the interest in percutaneous coronary intervention for chronic total occlusion (CTO) has increased dramatically, leading to high success rates. Failure of guidewire crossing is the most common reason for failed CTO attempts. Certain angiographic features, such as blunt proximal CTO cap, tortuosity, heavy calcification, and lack of visibility of path in the distal vessel, increase procedural difficulty. ObjectivesTo determine the inter-rater repeatability of a musculoskeletal examination and to compare findings between adolescent athletes and non-athletes in Finland.MethodsIn this cross-sectional study, a musculoskeletal examination assessing posture, mobility and movement control was carried out by a sports and exercise medicine physician on 399 athletes aged 14–17 years and 177 non-athletes.
