Pathway CH-1 Study: Sphenopalatine Ganglion (SPG) Stimulation for Acute Treatment of Chronic Cluster Headache (CCH) - Initial Experience (S36.002)

2012

Objective: We aimed to investigate the safety and efficacy of SPG stimulation for the acute treatment of CCH. Background The pain and autonomic symptoms of cluster headache result from activation of the trigeminal parasympathetic reflex, mediated through the SPG. Design/Methods: A multi-center, dose range finding, multiple headache attack (HA), acute treatment study with random insertion of placebo has been initiated. All subjects meet the ICHD-II criteria for CCH with a minimum of 4 HAs/week. Subjects are implanted with a miniaturized neurostimulator which, along with a controller, provides SPG stimulation. Prior to the randomized period, stimulation parameters are adjusted in a titration …

Treatment of patients with essential hypertension and microalbuminuria.

1998

There has been increasing interest in the question of whether microalbuminuria can be used in the risk stratification of patients with essential hypertension. A cluster of cardiovascular and/or renal risk factors may be associated with microalbuminuria in hypertension. Despite this, prospective data about the potential role of microalbuminuria as a prognostic marker of cardiovascular and/or renal risk have been sparse and inconclusive until now. Blood pressure values have been considered the most important determinant of microalbuminuria in essential hypertension; however, hyperinsulinaemia--a metabolic component-was noted to be present in conjunction with high blood pressure. Furthermore, …

The Relationship Between Demographic Variables and Substance Use in Undergraduates

2018

The aim of this study was to explore the relationships between demographic variables and substance use during the last month among undergraduates. A self-administered questionnaire “Students 2004” was distributed among a convenience sample of undergraduates (n = 983; between the ages of 21 and 36) at a large, public university in the south of Poland. The data were analyzed statistically, using chi-squared test, logistic regression, and cluster analysis. The results indicated that excessive alcohol drinking and substance use among students are related to being male, studying social sciences, living in a dorm or apartment, and living in an urban area. Binge drinking is related to gender and l…

Using Two-Step Cluster Analysis and Latent Class Cluster Analysis to Classify the Cognitive Heterogeneity of Cross-Diagnostic Psychiatric Inpatients

2020

The heterogeneity of cognitive profiles among psychiatric patients has been reported to carry significant clinical information. However, how to best characterize such cognitive heterogeneity is still a matter of debate. Despite being well suited for clinical data, cluster analysis techniques, like the Two-Step and the Latent Class, received little to no attention in the literature. The present study aimed to test the validity of the cluster solutions obtained with Two-Step and Latent Class cluster analysis on the cognitive profile of a cross-diagnostic sample of 387 psychiatric inpatients. Two-Step and Latent Class cluster analysis produced similar and reliable solutions. The overall result…

Mild cognitive impairment: classification method and procedure

2012

Title: Mild cognitive impairment: classification method and procedure. Abstract: Mild cognitive impairment (MCI) is one of the most important clinical entities in the field of cognitive neuroscience, the size of their numbers and the possible evolution of some of the subtypes of dementia. The aim of this study is to test a method and procedure for classification of MCI in terms of neuropsychological test scores and its convergence with established clinical criteria, and analyze the differences between the resulting groups. After applying the inclusion-exclusion criteria, was as- sessed using a battery of neuropsychological tests to 39 people aged be- tween 60 and 89 years. Diagnostic groups…

Principal component analysis and cluster analysis for measuring the local organisation of human atrial fibrillation

2001

The distribution of atrial electrogram types has been proposed to characterise human atrial fibrillation. The aim of this study was to provide computer procedures for evaluating the local organisation of intracardiac recordings during AF as an alternative to off-line manual classification. Principal components analysis (PCA) reduced the data set to a few representative activations, and cluster analysis (CA) measured the average dissimilarity between consecutive activations of an intracardiac signal. The data set consisted of 106 bipolar signals recorded on 11 patients during electrophysiological studies for catheter ablation. Performances of PCA and CA in distinguishing between organised (t…

Determination of the Time Window of Event-Related Potential Using Multiple-Set Consensus Clustering

2020

Clustering is a promising tool for grouping the sequence of similar time-points aimed to identify the attention blocks in spatiotemporal event-related potentials (ERPs) analysis. It is most likely to elicit the appropriate time window for ERP of interest if a suitable clustering method is applied to spatiotemporal ERP. However, how to reliably estimate a proper time window from entire individual subjects’ data is still challenging. In this study, we developed a novel multiset consensus clustering method in which several clustering results of multiple subjects were combined to retrieve the best fitted clustering for all the subjects within a group. Then, the obtained clustering was processed…
