Abstract In the current study, we have performed ab initio DFT calculations on the gradually growing 2D periodic models of capped single-wall carbon nanotubes (SW CNTs) upon their perpendicular junctions with the Ni(111) substrate, in order to understand the peculiarities of the initial stage of their growth on either smooth or nanostructured catalytic particles. Coding emotions in computer-mediated communication: the example of YouTube comments

Computer-mediated communication (CMC) is essentially text-based. This is generally said to result in a “paucity of paralinguistic and non-linguistic cues” (Bieswanger, 2013: 468), but it is also considered to be the main reason for the development of other characteristic non-verbal modalities, such as emoticons and emoji. How are, then, emotions expressed in such a specific context? Are verbal modalities as limited as they are said to be? Do non-verbal modalities complete or replace them? This paper will try to answer those questions using discourse analysis tools applied to a sample of comments on a YouTube video.

Set in the tradition of studies that look at digital interactions, this paper aims to explore the dimension of illness as referred to by informal caregivers in online exchanges. The research attempts to a) describe posts as mediated illness stories by comparing them to the storytelling in interaction model (Mishler), and b) explore what is revealed about the writer. A data set of 7371 posts (including sub-replies) has been studied as personal narratives in non-clinical therapeutic exchanges by means of Digital Conversation Analysis (Giles et al.), and investigated as written emotional disclosure (Pennebaker). Valkohäntäkauris (Odocoileus virginianus) on Yhdysvalloista Suomeen tuotu vieraslaji. Kauriiden ja autojen yhteentörmäykset ovat lisääntyneet kauriiden määrän kasvaessa. Kolareiden ja muiden kauriista aiheutuvien haittojen vähentämiseksi kannan kokoa säädellään metsästämällä. Vuosittaisten metsästyslupien määrä päätetään kannan koon arvioiden perusteella. Tässä työssä esitellään uusi tapa arvioida Suomen valkohäntäkauriiden kantaa. Vuosittain metsästettyjen valkohäntäkauriiden lukumäärät tunnetaan metsästäjien ilmoitusten perusteella. Valkosolupitoisuuksien bayesilainen mallintaminen lasten leukemian ylläpitohoidossa

Lasten akuutin lymfoblastileukemian ylläpitovaiheen hoidossa tehtävät lääkeannostuspäätökset pohjataan nykyisin potilaan veren valkosolupitoisuuteen, joka on hoidon tehokkuudesta kertova tekijä. Potilaalle sopiva lääkeannostus on hoidon onnistumisen ja turvallisuuden kannalta tärkeä, mutta sen löytäminen on vaikeaa, sillä annettu lääkitys näkyy valkosolupitoisuudessa viiveellä, ja potilaiden elimistön reagointi lääkitykseen on yksilöllistä. Sopivan lääkeannostuksen löytämistä hankaloittavat myös hoidonaikaiset tulehdukset, jotka voivat muuttaa valkosolupitoisuutta hetkellisesti.
