Polymeric Nanogels: Nanocarriers For Drug Delivery Application.

2012

The application of nanotechnology to medicine has enabled the development of functionalised nanoparticles that, acting as carriers, can be loaded with drugs or genetic material to be released with a controlled mechanism in specific districts of the organism. Even though nanomedicine is a relative new branch of science, many type of nanocarriers for drug delivery have been developed over the past 30 years, such as liposomes, dendrimers, quantum dots, solid lipid nanoparticles, viruses and virus-like nanoparticles as well as a wide var iety of polymeric nanoparticles. Among these last, in our opinion, nanogels deserve a special attention. Nanogels are nanoscalar polymer networks, with a tende…

Supramolecular Modification of ABC Triblock Terpolymers in Confinement Assembly

2018

The self-assembly of AB diblock copolymers in three-dimensional (3D) soft confinement of nanoemulsions has recently become an attractive bottom up route to prepare colloids with controlled inner morphologies. In that regard, ABC triblock terpolymers show a more complex morphological behavior and could thus give access to extensive libraries of multicompartment microparticles. However, knowledge about their self-assembly in confinement is very limited thus far. Here, we investigated the confinement assembly of polystyrene-block-poly(4-vinylpyridine)-block-poly(tert-butyl methacrylate) (PS-b-P4VP-b-PT or SVT) triblock terpolymers in nanoemulsion droplets. Depending on the block weight fractio…

Nanoscale mechanical characterization of polymers by atomic force microscopy (AFM) nanoindentations: Viscoelastic characterization on a model material

2009

The Atomic Force Microscope (AFM), apart form its conventional use as a microscope, is also used for the characterization of the local mechanical properties of polymers. In fact, the elastic characterization of purely elastic materials using this instrument can be considered as a well assessed technique while the challenge remains the characterization of the viscoelastic mechanical properties. In particular, one finds the mechanical behavior changing when performing indentations at different loading rates, i.e., on different time scales. Moreover, this apparent viscoelastic behavior can also be due to complex contact mechanics phenomena, with the onset of plasticity and long-term viscoelast…

Mechanical Performance of CNT Fibres

2014

The initial strength hype over carbon nanotubes arose from predictions of the strength of individual graphene layers, encouraged by measurements of individual MWCNTs and SWCNT bundles in AFM. The challenge for fibres composed of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) is to translate the impressive properties of the individual carbon nanotubes into the fibres. Yarn-like fibres composed of carbon nanotubes made by the direct spinning process have been used as the subject of this study. There have been occasional observations of strengths greater than 5 N/tex, which have served to maintain the enthusiasm for on-going developments. Here, we will re-examine those reports in the context of the response of nanot…
