2022
People struggling with acne vulgaris, not only experience skin eruptions and skin pain, but also report that their quality of life is worse compared with healthy people. Ankle plantar flexor muscles are active in the stance phase of walking to propel the body forward. Increasing walking speed requires increased plantar flexor excitation, frequently assessed using surface electromyography (EMG). Despite its popularity, validity of surface EMG applied on shank muscles is mostly unclear. Thus, we examined the agreement between surface and intramuscular EMG at a range of walking speeds. Ten participants walked overground at slow, preferred, fast, and maximum walking speeds (1.01 ± 0.13, 1.43 ± 0.19, 1.84 ± 0.23, and 2.20 ± 0.38 m s-1, respectively) while surface and fine-wire EMG activities of flexor hallucis longus (FHL), soleus (SOL), medial gastrocnemius (MG…
Prevalence of acne vulgaris among women with polycystic ovary syndrome: a systemic review and meta-analysis.
2020
The aim of this meta-analysis was to evaluate the prevalence of acne among women with PCOS worldwide, and in subgroups of patients with different age, geographical-region, and PCOS definition-criteria, compared to healthy non-PCOS counterparts. A comprehensive literature search was performed in PubMed (including Medline), Web of Science, and Scopus databases for retrieving articles in English investigating the prevalence of PCOS. ‘Meta-prop’ method was applied to estimate pooled prevalence of acne in both groups. Meta-regression was conducted to find the association between acne in women with and without PCOS. We used 60 studies, included data of 240,213 women with PCOS and 1,902,022 health…

General quality of life of patients with acne vulgaris before and after performing selected cosmetological treatments
2017
Background Achieving a satisfying quality of life for a patient by applying individually matched therapy is, simultaneously, a great challenge and a priority for contemporary medicine. Patients with visible dermatological ailments are particularly susceptible to reduction in the general quality of life. Among the dermatological diseases, acne causes considerable reduction in the quality of life and changes in self-perception that lead to the worsening of a patient's mental condition, including depression and suicidal thoughts. As a result, difficulties in contact with loved ones, as well as social and professional problems are observed, which show that acne is not a somatic problem alone. T…
The association of serum androsterone glucuronide with inflammatory lesions in women with adult acne1
2002
Serum androsterone glucuronide (AoG) is a metabolite of circulating androgens under the influence of 5α-reductase activity and has been shown to be particularly elevated in women with acne. In this study, we wanted to evaluate changes in AoG before and after treatment with an oral contraceptive or placebo, and to assess whether changes correlated with the number and type of acne lesions. In order to accomplish these aims, we obtained sera from a completed prospective randomized trial, which was designed to assess the effectiveness of an oral contraceptive compared to placebo. Assessments were carried out in 56 women with moderate acne who were treated with Ortho Tri-Cyclen (norgestimate and…
