VOLCANIC CO2 FLUX MEASUREMENTS BY TUNABLE DIODE LASER ABSORPTION SPECTROSCOPY

2013

Introduction In the last decades, the use of near-infrared room-temperature diode lasers for gas sensing has grown significantly. The use of these devices, for instance in combination with optical fibers, is particularly convenient for volcanic monitoring applications [1,2]. Here, we report on the first results of the application of an open-path infrared tunable laser-based at Campi Flegrei (Southern Italy). Such Diode-laser-based measurements were performed, during two field campaigns (october 2012, and january 2013), in the attempt to obtain novel information on the current degassing unrest of Solfatara and Pisciarelli fumarolic fields. Results and Discussion At each site, we used an ad-h…

Impact of Novel Energy Management Actions on Household Appliances for Money Savings and CO2 Emissions Reduction

2009

In order to obtain CO2 emissions reductions, energy management control actions inside apartments and detached houses have to be carried out. In this work, new control actions devoted to the reduction of electrical energy consumptions inside typical Italian apartments are proposed. These “Distributed on Site” (DoS) actions consist in employing specific control strategies to smartly exploit the hot water provided by a solar panel, the electricity generated by a photovoltaic panel and the delayed starting of appliances.

SPĒĒK kompozītmembrānu īpašību pētījumi pielietojumam CO2 elektroķīmiskajos pārveidotājos

2019

Electrochemical conversion of carbon dioxide to formic acid at Sn and BDD cathodes

2019

Electrochemical reduction of CO2 to useful compounds in the aqueous electrolyte has been actively investigated as alternative technologies to contribute to curbing the rising levels of CO2 in the atmosphere. Many researchers have focused on the CO2 reduction to formic acid, which is considered one of the main target-products owing to its usefulness for agriculture, chemical and pharmaceutical industry, and it is expected to be a good hydrogen storage medium for an upcoming H2-energy-based society [1,2]. In the last few years, an increasing attention was devoted to the utilization of tin electrode for its low cost, low toxicity as well as the high selectivity towards the synthesis of formic …

How far are we from the valorization of waste-CO2 to formic acid via electrochemical routes for the applicative scale?

To date, the decarbonization of the world economy and storage and production of energy from alternative C-based sources is considered a relevant topic. The electrochemical conversion of CO2 has been widely investigated since the 1870s as a promising strategy to convert waste-CO2 into value-added chemicals [1,2]. Recently, it was highlighted that, among the several emerging technologies for CO2 conversion to value-added products on an applicative scale, electrochemical technologies are the closest to commercialization due to the numerous start-ups and established companies being invested in this area (e.g., Opus-12, Dioxide Material, and Carbon Recycling International) [3]. These technologie…

Effect of Pressure on the Electrochemical Conversion of CO2 to CO

2017

To minimize the negative effect of carbon dioxide as a greenhouse gas and introduce renewable energy in the chemical and energy chain, an interesting approach is the Carbon Capture and Conversion. In this context, one of more appealing conversion strategies is the el Ectrochemical reduction of CO2, which could combines the utilization of excess electric energy from intermittent renewable sources with CO2 (1). Furthermore, CO2 can be selectively converted into various useful chemicals by changing the operating conditions of electrolysis. In particular, an increasing attention has been devoted to the electrochemical conversion of carbon dioxide to carbon monoxide (2,3). The main obstacle of t…

Influence of Material-Related Aspectsof Additive and Subtractive Ti-6Al-4VManufacturing on Energy Demandand Carbon Dioxide Emissions

2017

The additive manufacturing of metal parts represents a promising process that could beused alongside traditional manufacturing methods. The research scenario in this field isstill largely unexplored, as far as the technological solutions adopted to integrate differentprocesses are concerned and in terms of environmental and economic impact assessment. In this article, an electron beam melting (EBM) process and a machining process have beenanalyzed and compared using a cradle-to-grave life cycle–based approach. The productionof components made of the Ti-6Al-4V alloy has been assumed as a case study. Theproposed methodology is able to account for all of the main factors of influence on energydem…

Challenges Faced by the Eu’s Energy Policy on CO2 Emissions From 1997-2017, Including Bilaterial Trade Between The EU and the US

2020

Purpose of research: The European Union has three main objectives in its energy policy. The most crucial one is due by 2020, to reduce greenhouse gas emissions (mainly CO2) by at least 20% below 1990 levels. This research attempts to calculate Actual-Open CO2 emission in the EU countries for the years 1997-2017, including in the calculation export and import of CO2 in products and services from the USA. Design/methodology/approach: This study takes into account the USA and 27 European countries (all the EU members without Malta). Actual-Open CO2 emissions were obtained by applying the appropriate Actual Emission Factor. The calculation takes into consideration the transfer of CO2 in exporte…
