Hardware Implementation of a Configurable Motion Estimator for Adjusting the Video Coding Performances

2012

International audience; Despite the diversity of video compression standard, the motion estimation still remains a key process which is used in most of them. Moreover, the required coding performances (bit-rate, PSNR, image spatial resolution, etc.) depend obviously of the application, the environment and the network communication. The motion estimation can therefore be adapted to fit with these performances. Meanwhile, the real time encoding is required in many applications. In order to reach this goal, we propose in this paper a hardware implementation of the motion estimator which enables the integer motion search algorithms to be modified and the fractional search and variable block siz…

The role of attention in preschoolers’ working memory

2015

Abstract Recent studies showed that introducing an unfilled delay or a secondary task between encoding and recall reduces recall performance in preschoolers, whereas increasing the attentional demand of this secondary task does not. Based on these results, different authors drew opposing conclusions regarding the use of attention in preschoolers’ memory maintenance. This study aimed to bring further evidence to bear on the issue. In two experiments, recall was reduced when an unfilled delay was introduced before recall, but also when the demand of the concurrent task increased. These effects did not interact with age, although performance improved from 4 to 6 years of age. A third experimen…

Speech-input multi-target machine translation

2007

In order to simultaneously translate speech into multiple languages an extension of stochastic finite-state transducers is proposed. In this approach the speech translation model consists of a single network where acoustic models (in the input) and the multilingual model (in the output) are embedded. The multi-target model has been evaluated in a practical situation, and the results have been compared with those obtained using several mono-target models. Experimental results show that the multi-target one requires less amount of memory. In addition, a single decoding is enough to get the speech translated into multiple languages.

Multithreaded Translation of Ptolemy II Designs on Multicore Platforms

2008

Ptolemy II is an open source environment for system design and test based on component data flow. This paradigm tries to make parallel systems more deterministic and understandable. In this work we propose a technique to translate designs developed with Ptolemy II, into multithreaded Java implementations on multicore platforms. We have chosen Java mainly because Ptolemy II is implemented in Java and then we get direct code reuse. The counterpart is a certain amount of overhead that we expect to be less relevant as Java runtime environment will evolve. The main goals are to produce efficient parallel simulators and software devices with competitive performance level. We show by means of an e…

A Nonlinear Label Compression and Transformation Method for Multi-label Classification Using Autoencoders

2016

Multi-label classification targets the prediction of multiple interdependent and non-exclusive binary target variables. Transformation-based algorithms transform the data set such that regular single-label algorithms can be applied to the problem. A special type of transformation-based classifiers are label compression methods, which compress the labels and then mostly use single label classifiers to predict the compressed labels. So far, there are no compression-based algorithms that follow a problem transformation approach and address non-linear dependencies in the labels. In this paper, we propose a new algorithm, called Maniac (Multi-lAbel classificatioN usIng AutoenCoders), which extra…

Experiences from a wearable-mobile acquisition system for ambulatory assessment of diet and activity

2017

Public health trends are currently monitored and diagnosed based on large studies that often rely on pen-and-paper data methods that tend to require a large collection campaign. With the pervasiveness of smart-phones and -watches throughout the general population, we argue in this paper that such devices and their built-in sensors can be used to capture such data more accurately with less of an effort. We present a system that targets a pan-European and harmonised architecture, using smartphones and wrist-worn activity loggers to enable the collection of data to estimate sedentary behavior and physical activity, plus the consumption of sugar-sweetened beverages. We report on a unified pilot…

VIBPACK: A package to treat multidimensional electron-vibrational molecular problems with application to magnetic and optical properties

2018

We present a FORTRAN code based on a new powerful and efficient computational approach to solve multidimensional dynamic Jahn-Teller and pseudo Jahn-Teller problems. This symmetry-assisted approach constituting a theoretical core of the program is based on the full exploration of the point symmetry of the electronic and vibrational states. We also report some selected examples of increasing complexity aimed to display the theoretical background as well as the advantages and capabilities of the program to evaluate of the energy pattern, magnetic and optical properties of large multimode vibronic systems. © 2018 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.

Enabling Retransmissions for Achieving Reliable Multicast Communications in WSNs

2016

To ensure end-to-end reliable multicast or broadcast transmissions in IEEE 802.15.4 based wireless sensor networks WSNs) is a challenging task since no retransmission and acknowledgment mechanisms are defined in such WSNs. In this paper, we propose three retransmission enabled multicast transmission schemes in order to achieve reliable packet transmissions in such networks. Different from the legacy CSMA/CA principle, these schemes allow a sending or forwarding node to retransmit a packet if necessary and enable implicit or/and explicit acknowledgment for multicast services. Simulations are performed in order to assess the performance of these schemes in terms of number of retransmissions, …

Multicast delivery of file download services in 3G mobile networks with MBMS

2008

This article investigates the efficient transmission of file download services to several users simultaneously in 3G mobile networks with HSDPA (High-Speed Downlink Packet Access) and MBMS (Multimedia Broadcast Multicast Services). HSDPA supports high speed point-to-point (p-t-p) transmissions (up to several Mb/s), whereas with MBMS the same content can be transmitted with a point-to-multipoint (p-t-m) connection to multiple users in a unidirectional fashion. Multicast delivery can be implemented through only p-t-p transmissions with HSDPA, a single p-t-m transmission with MBMS, or using both jointly in a hybrid approach by employing HSDPA for error repair of the MBMS p-t-m transmission. We…
