2016

Variation and change in the encoding of motion events is a thematic collective volume focused on motion event encoding, one of the main topics in Cognitive Linguistics. Edited by Juliana Goschler and Anatol Stefanowitsch, it is the forty-first volume of the Human Cognitive Processing series, a John Benjamins’ interdisciplinary book series concerning research on language(s) and human cognitive faculties. The book results from a theme session of the Fourth International Conference of the German Cognitive Linguistic Association.

Status of Recombinant Factor VIII Concentrate Treatment for Hemophilia A in Italy: Characteristics and Clinical Benefits

2019

The current interest in recombinant factor VIII (rFVIII) products stems from the fact that they offer a technological solution to prolonging the half-life of and reducing the risk of formation of alloantibodies (inhibitors) against FVIII in treated patients with hemophilia A (HA). The Italian health care system has authorized the use of a wide range of rFVIII concentrates of the first, second, and third generation, as well as new innovative rFVIII preparates with an extended half-life (EHL) (Kogenate FS®-Bayer, belonging to the second generation and replaced since 2017 by a product consisting of the same modified molecule; because it is only available until the end of the current year, it w…

Engineering a Circular Riboregulator in Escherichia coli

2020

RNAs of different shapes and sizes, natural or synthetic, can regulate gene expression in prokaryotes and eukaryotes. Circular RNAs have recently appeared to be more widespread than previously thought, but their role in prokaryotes remains elusive. Here, by inserting a riboregulatory sequence within a group I permuted intron-exon ribozyme, we created a small noncoding RNA that self-splices to produce a circular riboregulator in Escherichia coli . We showed that the resulting riboregulator can trans -activate gene expression by interacting with a cis -repressed messenger RNA. We characterized the system with a fluorescent reporter and with an antibiotic resistance marker, and we modeled thi…

Robotic Pancreaticoduodenectomy: Technical Considerations

2017

Robotic surgery can help to overcome some technical limitations of laparoscopic pancreaticoduodenectomy thanks to EndoWrist instrumentations and the 3D view. Despite the potential benefits, its employment is still low and controversial. We focused on some important technical details crucial for a safe robotic pancreatectomy. After performing 52 robotic pancreatic resections that included 10 pancreatoduodenectomies, the authors describe their technique. The review of literature on robotic and laparoscopic duodenopancreatectomy is also performed in order to evaluate possible benefits of the robotic platform. We describe the step-by-step surgical procedure, analyzing all possible troubleshooti…

Low-cost motion control solution for industrial manufacturing systems

2011

This paperwork deals with a low-cost actuation solution, based upon induction motors, which was seldom used in the motion control systems, especially for the machine tools feed drives. A simulation approach, based upon a mathematical model of the induction motor, for tuning the controllers of the systems is presented. Experimental researches developed upon a two axes motion control system, both axes being driven by alternating current asynchronous motors were also performed in order to test the proposed strategies. The asynchronous motors, used as actuation devices were equipped with incremental rotary encoders and controlled by vector frequency inverters and DSP motion control cards were u…

Positioning system for assembly and manufacturing tasks

2019

The paper presents a two-axis positioning system using asynchronous motors as actuation devices. Theuse of asynchronous motors reduces the overall cost of the system, while providing actuating torques superior to the ones provided by stepping motors. The system is controlled by mean of a programmable logic controller (PLC) and two voltage-frequency inverters fitted with motion control cards. In contrasts to a stepping motor system, which works in open loop mode, the proposed system uses closed loop control on each axis. The motion loop is closed by means of an incremental encoder.

Development of Motorized Slewing Mirror Stage for the UFFO Project

2013

The Ultra-Fast Flash Observatory (UFFO) is a space observatory for optical follow-ups of gamma ray bursts (GRBs), aiming to explore the first 60 seconds of GRBs optical emission. UFFO is utilized to catch early optical emissions from GRBs within few sec after trigger using a Gimbal mirror which redirects the optical path rather than slewing entire spacecraft. We have developed a 15 cm two-axis Gimbal mirror stage for the UFFO-Pathfinder which is going to be on board the Lomonosov satellite which is to be launched in 2013. The stage is designed for fast and accurate motion with given budgets of 3 kg of mass and 3 Watt of power. By employing stepping motors, the slewing mirror can rotate fast…

A New Method of Velocity Estimation Based on Variable Temporal Basis Using Incremental Encoder

1997

Abstract This paper deals with analysis and synthesis of algorithms for digital conditioning of signals generated by incremental encoders to estimate velocity of rotating devices for control purposes. Main objectives are to obtain high accuracy at low and high velocity and low tracking delays during accelerations. A digital conditioning method is described, Which uses a polynomial of order n whose coefficients are updated so as to fit the n+1 most recent velocity data acquired on a variable temporal basis. Digital sinlulations and experimental findings are shown with the ainl to validate the proposed estimation method and compare it with other methods.

A TDMA-Based MAC Protocol Supporting Cooperative Communications in Wireless Mesh Networks

2011

This paper proposes a TDMA-based medium access control protocol which enables cooperative communications in multi-hop wireless mesh networks. According to the proposed scheme, each router at the two-hop neighbourhood of each other is allocated to a specific time slot for accommodating either direct or cooperative transmissions in a coordinated manner, controlled by mini-slots which are part of the time slot. Benefiting from the elaborate mini-slot design, channel resources are fairly and efficiently allocated to each router so that no handshake is needed prior to each packet transmission. By providing access priority to cooperative transmission through an optimal relay which is determined b…
