Abstract This paper addresses the issue of identity in relation to war through a close reading of Michael Ondaatje’s The English Patient. It investigates the connections between war and the construction of identity, focusing on aspects such as violence and death. In his novel Ondaatje uncovers private histories alongside the framing events of World War Two. Kip’s perception of war and his way of living through it suggest that the engagement on the world’s battlefield is riddled with inner conflicts separating people or bringing them together. National audience; Une revue critique de la littérature a été menée sur le lien entre travail posté (TP) et survenue de maladies cérébro- et cardiovasculaires (MCCV). Dans plusieurs études de bonne qualité, le TP est associé à une augmentation modeste mais significative du risque de maladies cardiaques ischémiques fatales et non fatales. Les conclusions sont moins claires pour le lien avec la mortalité cardiovasculaire ischémique et les pathologies cérébrovasculaires. Sur le plan de la causalité, des biais de sélection difficiles à prendre en compte sur le plan méthodologique ne peuvent être écartés pour expliquer ces associations observées. This paper analyses P. Ricoeur's proposal about personal identity, entitled hermeneutics of the self, which aims to fill a halfway philosophical place between Descartes and Nietzsche. The author of Soimême comme un autre offers a narrative solution that will be critically considered according to the relation that the hermeneutics of the self establishes between philosophy and literature.

Fourth-order cascaded Raman shift in AsSe chalcogenide suspended-core fiber pumped at 2 μm

International audience; Cascaded Raman wavelength shifting up to the fourth order ranging from 2092 to 2450nm is demonstrated using a nanosecond pump at 1995nm in a low-loss As38Se62 suspended-core microstructured fiber. These four Stokes shifts are obtained with a low peak power of 11W, and only 3W are required to obtain three shifts. The Raman gain coefficient for the fiber is estimated to (1.6 +-0.5)x 10e−11 m/W at 1995nm. The positions and the amplitudes of the Raman peaks are well reproduced by the numerical simulations of the nonlinear propagation.
