The search for identity in the narrative stylistic and poetic study

2016

This dissertation deals with the quest for narrative identity in four distinct narratives: Le Premier Homme, by Albert Camus; Les Oliviers de la justice, by Jean Pélégri; Ébauche du père, by Jean Sénac; and Outremer, by Morgan Sportes. The authors of these narratives belonged to the community of French people born in Algeria and, later on, to that of the pieds-noirs. The texts examine mainly the end of French Algeria. This accounts for the reference to the years 1954-1962, among other periods of time, and to the tragic consequences these years led to, including exile and uprooting. The designation “French Algeria” in itself contains at least a dual reference to identity, if not referring to…

Morphological Similarity and Ecological Overlap in Two Rotifer Species

2013

Co-occurrence of cryptic species raises theoretically relevant questions regarding their coexistence and ecological similarity. Given their great morphological similitude and close phylogenetic relationship (i.e., niche retention), these species will have similar ecological requirements and are expected to have strong competitive interactions. This raises the problem of finding the mechanisms that may explain the coexistence of cryptic species and challenges the conventional view of coexistence based on niche differentiation. The cryptic species complex of the rotifer Brachionus plicatilis is an excellent model to study these questions and to test hypotheses regarding ecological differentia…

Infinite rate mutually catalytic branching in infinitely many colonies: The longtime behavior

2012

Consider the infinite rate mutually catalytic branching process (IMUB) constructed in [Infinite rate mutually catalytic branching in infinitely many colonies. Construction, characterization and convergence (2008) Preprint] and [Ann. Probab. 38 (2010) 479-497]. For finite initial conditions, we show that only one type survives in the long run if the interaction kernel is recurrent. On the other hand, under a slightly stronger condition than transience, we show that both types can coexist.

Coexistence of ferro- and antiferromagnetic interactions in a metal-organic radical-based (6,3)-helical network with large channels.

2005

A metal–organic open-framework with an unprecedented (6,3)-helical topology, large channels and mixed ferro- and antiferromagnetic interactions has been synthesized using a three-connecting tricarboxylic polychlorotriphenylmethyl radical and Co(II) ions.

Using self-deferral to achieve fairness between Wi-Fi and NR-U in downlink and uplink scenarios

2022

Wireless networks operating in unlicensed bands generally use one of two channel access paradigms: random access (e.g., Wi-Fi) or scheduled access (e.g., LTE License Assisted Access, LTE LAA and New Radio-Unlicensed, NR-U). The coexistence between these two paradigms is based on listen before talk (LBT), which was, however, designed for random access. Meanwhile, scheduled systems require that their transmissions start at the beginning of a slot boundary. Synchronizing this boundary to the end of LBT usually requires transmitting a reservation signal (RS) to block the channel. Since the RS is a waste of channel resources, we investigate an alternative self-deferral approach (gap-based access…

An Inter-Technology Communication Scheme for WiFi/ZigBee Coexisting Networks

2017

In this paper we show how inter-technology interference can be exploited to set-up a low-rate bi-directional communication channel between heterogeneous technologies, which coexist in ISM bands. In particular, we focus on WiFi and ZigBee networks, whose high density deployments make coexistence a critical issue. We monitor the transmission duration of the interference and, after recognizing ZigBee interference from WiFi off-the-shelf receivers, we precisely measure the channel busy intervals to map time duration to communication symbols. A similar approach is used on the ZigBee receivers for making the communication channel bidirectional. Extensive experimental results show the feasibility …
