Fumo, caffè e rischio di Sclerosi Multipla: uno studio caso-controllo

2007

A lot of studies support hypothesis that Multiple Sclerosis (MS) rises from interaction between genetic predisposition and environmental factors, not yet identified. As regards environmental factors, we investigated association between disease and exposure to smoking and coffee, wether in incidence or in progression of disease. We led a study by a case-control scheme 1:1, where comparison was between a MS patient and an healthy subject. MS patients (cases) were recognized among people attended in MS Ambulatory at the Neurosciences Department of University Hospital of Palermo. Healthy subjects (controls) were recognized by an epidemiological survey leaded on territory. Cases and controls wer…

Pga26 mediates filamentation and biofilm formation and is required for virulence in Candida albicans

2011

The Candida albicans gene PGA26 encodes a small cell wall protein and is upregulated during de novo wall synthesis in protoplasts. Disruption of PGA26 caused hypersensitivity to cell wall-perturbing compounds (Calcofluor white and Congo red) and to zymolyase, which degrades the cell wall β-1,3-glucan network. However, susceptibility to caspofungin, an inhibitor of β-1,3-glucan synthesis, was decreased. In addition, pga26Δ mutants show increased susceptibility to antifungals (fluconazol, posaconazol or amphotericin B) that target the plasma membrane and have altered sensitivities to environmental (heat, osmotic and oxidative) stresses. Except for a threefold increase in β-1,6-glucan and a sl…

Report of the IVth Workshop of the Spanish National Network on Mycotoxins and Toxigenic Fungi and Their Decontamination Processes (MICOFOOD), Held in…

2019

Ensiling is a practice commonly employed worldwide to preserve different kinds of crops for long periods of storage with similar nutritional values to the fresh materials. Since silages are one of the major components of the ruminant diet, these materials represent a potential source of mycotoxins as a consequence of the growth of filamentous fungi. The aim of this study was to analyse the presence of aflatoxins and Fusarium mycotoxins in different types of silages (maize, grass, alfalfa, sugar beet pulp, immature corn and ryegrass) collected in dairy farms located in four Spanish regions. Fungal populations, lactic acid bacteria, pH and water activity of the samples were also evaluated. Pe…

Contributo alla conoscenza della vegetazione e del paesaggio vegetale della Riserva Naturale “Monte Cofano” (Sicilia occidentale).

2008

It is here presented the results of a study of the phytosociological and plant landscape of Mount Cofano Natural Reserve (Custonaci, Trapani) together with a cartographic representation to a scale of 1:10000 (reduced to a scale of 1:20000). The studied area is localised along the western side of Sicily island and it is spread out for 537,5 ha, dominated by Mt. Cofano rocky promontory (659 mts.), regarded as one of the most interesting biotopes of the regional territory linked to its floristic, zoological and environmental features. From a geolithological point of view, the area is characterized by carbonathic substrata relative to Monte Sparacio-Monte Cofano and Monte Speziale-Monte Palatim…

Neuronal polarization is impaired in mice lacking RhoE expression

2012

J. Neurochem. (2012) 121, 903–914. Abstract Proper development of neuronal networks relies on the polarization of the neurons, thus the establishment of two compartments, axons and dendrites, whose formation depends on cytoskeletal rearrangements. Rnd proteins are regulators of actin organization and they are important players in several aspects of brain development as neurite formation, axon guidance and neuron migration. We have recently demonstrated that mice lacking RhoE/Rnd3 expression die shortly after birth and have neuromotor impairment and neuromuscular alterations, indicating an abnormal development of the nervous system. In this study, we have further investigated the specific ro…

Complexity of operations on cofinite languages

2010

International audience; We study the worst case complexity of regular operation on cofinite languages (i.e., languages whose complement is finite) and provide algorithms to compute efficiently the resulting minimal automata.

Neuroesteroides y adicción alcohólica

2007

Maternal vitamin deficiency mimicking multiple acyl-CoA dehydrogenase deficiency on newborn screening

2021

Abstract Background In infancy multiple acyl-CoA dehydrogenase deficiency (MADD) is commonly a severe inherited metabolic disease caused by genetic defects in electron transfer flavoprotein (ETF) or ETF ubiquinone oxidoreductase. Both enzymes require flavin adenine dinucleotide (FAD) as a cofactor. Riboflavin (vitamin B2) is a precursor in the synthesis of FAD. MADD can be detected by newborn screening (NBS) based on elevation of multiple acylcarnitines. Methods We present the results of two children whose NBS results and subsequent confirmatory testing resulted in a suspected diagnosis of MADD. In parallel in both children vitamin B12 deficiency was detected. Results Biochemical profiles n…
